This position is responsible for performing and/or overseeing an inmate work crew in the performance of tasks related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of a boiler plant within SCI Greene. |
Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. The incumbent performs and/or oversees an inmate work crew in the performance of the following duties in accordance with all applicable policies, processes, and procedures: 50% Maintains efficient operations of Heating and Cooling equipment under normal and emergency conditions. Utilizes manual and automatic control operation systems. Reads and interprets visual and aural gauges, meters, and sensing devices. Performs scheduled and non-routine maintenance and operational assessments. Cleans and maintains equipment and makes minor repairs to ensure proper functionality. 20% Operates and maintains auxiliary equipment such as feedwater pumps, condensate pumps, chemical feed pumps, forced draft fans, control equipment, ash system, etc. 10% Tests boiler water chemistry and water softening system. Maintains logs of tests performed and inventory of water treatment chemicals, reagents and supplies needed for testing. 5% Performs general housekeeping of plant and other assigned areas. Performs daily inventories. 5% Oversees inmate workers in the performance of work assignments. Monitors inmate movement during operational hours and processes sign-out sheets. Maintains a safe and secure work environment. Conducts searches of inmate workers and work areas for contraband. Ensures tool control and caustic/toxic supply inventory records are maintained in accordance with applicable regulations and policies. 5% Communicates daily with supervisor and addresses any concerns or issues. Completes assigned paperwork, documentation, and daily inventories. 5% - Performs other duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates 2. Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary 3. Direct and oversee inmates in the standard principles and practices of boiler plant maintenance, operation, and repair. 4. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp 5. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels 6. Spend prolonged periods of time working indoors as well as outdoors in all weather conditions 7. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking 8. Work all shifts and posts as required by operational necessities and emergencies 9. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification 10. Maintain regular and reliable attendance 11. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in the maintenance, operation, and repair of a boiler plant 12. Operate basic office equipment 13. Maintain an active Power (Stationary) Engineer license in accordance with assigned work 14. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform 15. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing 16. Establish and maintain effective working relationships 17. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet) 18. Visually observe inmates’ activities 19. Administer emergency medical assistance to inmates and staff 20. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing 21. Travel as required |
