Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position provides assistance to a higher level Corrections Facility Maintenance Manager with planning, assigning, directing and coordinating the heating/utility plant and facility-wide building maintenance construction and repair operations at a
state correctional facility.


Description of Duties:

Assist the Corrections Facility Maintenance Manager 3 by supervising building renovations, maintenance and repair or demolition projects at a state correctional facility.

Supervise maintenance personnel in the performance of all building, electrical, mechanical renovations, construction activities or renovations, maintenance repair and/or demolition.

Assign general maintenance personnel and corrections tradesmen instructors, to maintenance and hazardous substance removal projects; determines priorities; schedules and reviews work for adherence to plans, specifications and technical trades and
safety standards; and prepares preliminary sketches for maintenance and renovation projects.

Supervises heating/utility plant supervisors and/or workers in the operation, repair and maintenance of a steam boiler or heating plant through the review of logs, charts and reports;assigns boiler plant workers, plant mechanics, laborers and other plant operations personnel to shifts; establishes and directs changes in boiler/heating plant operations, policies and procedures.

Estimates annual and special budgetary requirements for the facility maintenance department; prepares purchasing documents for, and controls the issuance of, equipment, supplies and material to be used in heating/utility plant operations, and/or
building maintenance and repair, and/or hazardous or toxic substance handling; and maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and equipment.

Assists in the coordination of facility construction, renovation and demolition projects with agency consultative staff and Department of General Services inspectors.

Attends all job conferences scheduled by the Department of General Services as needed.

Interviews and hires or recommends applicants for employment; approves leave and reviews work performance of subordinates.

Administers collective bargaining agreements, evaluates and responds to employee complaints and grievances.

Inspects work areas to insure compliance with established departmental and occupational safety standards and proper precautions for accomplishing work and for handling hazardous
substances.

Review and identifies training needs to staff, initiates training recommendations, conducts training and demonstrates more efficient work methods.

Performs related work as required.

10. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in facility maintenance
11. Operate basic office equipment
12. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform
13. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
14. Visually observe inmates’ activities
15. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
16. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
17. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
18. Travel as required

Will make on the spot decisions in an emergency that best follows Department of Corrections (DOC) training, policies and procedures.
