Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The Environmental Education Specialist assists the District Forester in the development and presentation of environmental education, recreation and interpretive programs and activities, and performs other duties in the Forbes Forest District. The position is headquartered at the Forbes District Office, work assignments will occur throughout the Forbes Forest District.

Description of Duties:

Environmental Education, Recreational Programming and Interpretation

*Plans, develops, coordinates, and presents environmental education, recreation, and interpretive programs and activities. Includes programs focusing on localized natural history, historic and cultural events, and environmental management issues for forest visitors, students, youth groups, special populations, civic organizations, and others. Facilitates these programs by conducting learning activities, audiovisual presentations, teacher workshops, staff workshops, and other environmental learning programs.

*Leads guided hikes, and other guided recreation programs which may include cross-country skiing, mountain biking, fishing, backpacking, and other types of state forest recreation.

*Provides assistance to educational institutions, civic groups, and public organizations in developing and implementing programs, teacher in-service workshops, and curriculum development.

*Prepares lesson plans and scripts for presentations.

*Establishes and maintains working relationships with local and state conservation groups, civic organizations, schools, and the public.

*Works in conjunction with forest district employees and local state park employees for programming and interpretation.

*Maintains natural, historic, and archeological collections. Maintains the district historic information and files. Researches and updates the history files. Uses the information for programming and development of historical pamphlets.

*Assists in researching and developing educational publications, exhibits and maps associated with programming and interpretation.

*Coordinates the use, repair and maintenance of environmental education and interpretive equipment.

Other Duties
*Has primary responsibility for the district Facebook page. Provides content frequently. Coordinates content from other district employees.

*Submits the Weekly Report for the district, by coordinating content from other district employees.

*Assists the Recreation Forester as needed or requested, as follows. Provides updates to local use map covers by periodically reviewing content. Works with Recreation Forester as requested to perform tasks such as but not limited to trail assessments, blazing, clearing, and signing. Coordinates recreation projects for Eagle Scouts and other civic groups upon request, by coordinating work with the Recreation Forester. Helps as needed on Conservation Volunteer Days and projects.

*Assists Service Foresters with programming and education related to forest management on private lands and community forests. Presents programs to schools and civic organizations. Assists as needed with Envirothon’s and other activities.

*Assists Fire Foresters with education to students, visitors, and partners in the proper messaging of wildfire prevention, suppression and mop-up.

*Assists in creating and implementing programming to educate visitors on forest pests including insects and diseases.

*Reviews and processes geocache site requests and agreements, and maintains files.

*Coordinates the placement of trail and road counters. Collects and maintains data from the devices.

*Completes at least the basic wildland fire training, and may pursue higher levels if interested. Actively participates in fire prevention, suppression and mop-up as needed.

*Performs district coordinator duties as assigned.

*Participates in prescribed fires as needed.

*Assists with Search and Rescue activities and programs as needed. Attends trainings for SAR as directed.

*Performs related work and trainings as directed or required. Assists other district and Bureau personnel with projects and programs as directed or requested.

*Travels to various work locations and maintains a Commonwealth vehicle.

*Works a schedule that may include weekdays, weekends, evenings, and possibly holidays as needed.
