Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position oversees inmates work crews in the performance of various maintenance, repair, construction, groundskeeping, and janitorial tasks in and around the facility for the Department of Corrections (DOC) State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Albion; and also is responsible for the performance or assistance of semi-skilled and skilled journey-level work in one or more trades.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

70% Oversees inmate work crews in completing routine construction and maintenance work orders to include lawn care, snow removal, janitorial, and other general maintenance work assignments. Plans and assigns daily inmate schedules and inspects completed work assignments. Provides instruction in the operation and preventative maintenance of machinery and vehicles. Maintains order and discipline of inmates during work assignments. Documents inmates’ attendance for compensation purposes and ensures the work assignments are completed.

Performs or assists other maintenance staff in the performance of semi-skilled and skilled journey work in trades such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, refrigeration, masonry, steam-fitting, welding, or other skilled trades.

10% Issues and inventories all materials and tools used to complete work assignments. Conducts searches of inmates and work areas to ensure that all materials and tools are accounted for.

10% Determines materials and tools needed to complete work assignments. Submits purchase requests for materials and tools as necessary.

10% Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates
2. Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary
3. Lead and oversee inmates in the standard principles and practices of maintenance, repair, and janitorial work
4. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp
5. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
6. Spend prolonged periods of time working indoors as well as outdoors in all weather conditions
7. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking
8. Work all shifts and posts as required by operational necessities and emergencies
9. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification
10. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
11. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in the maintenance trade
12. Operate basic office equipment
13. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform
14. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
15. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
16. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
17. Visually observe inmates’ activities
18. Administer emergency medical assistance to inmates and staff
19. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
20. Travel as required
