Also assists with general maintenance duties of the facilities physical plant and grounds in a manner consistent with the overall goals and objectives of the Maintenance Department. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. An employee in this class provides on-the-job training and shop instruction for the vocational training of inmates in the masonry trade. Work involves the instruction of inmates in the practices, methods, and procedures of the masonry trade by demonstration, explanation, and close supervision during training and work assignments. Employee is responsible for the custody and discipline of inmates during training and work assignments. Work is received in the form of work orders that may be accompanied by drawings, sketches or blueprints. Employee makes independent judgment concerning procedures, tools, equipment, and materials to be used by inmates in carrying out training and work assignments. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed by a technical or administrative superior through conferences, reports, and by inspection of completed assignments. Instructs inmates in the standard practices, methods, and procedures of the masonry trade using such items as diagrams, charts, illustrations, manuals, and blueprints; and demonstrates and explains the methods, procedures, materials, and tools, used in the installation, construction, repair, inspection, and maintenance of masonry structures and surfaces to include walls, floors, partitions, steps, foundations, ramps, walks, roads, curbs, chimneys, and storm drains. Plans and assigns work to inmates receiving masonry training; and reviews and inspects work in progress and upon completion for adherence to masonry standards. Participates in the work activities of the masonry trade at journeyman level; and assists inmate workers in the more difficult assignments Uses and explains sketches, drawings, and blueprints. Issues and collects tools, supplies, and materials required by inmate workers; and requisitions materials, supplies, and equipment. Maintains order and discipline among inmate workers; and searches inmates and work areas for contraband and insures security of work area. Maintains maintenance and repair records, and training progress, inventory, wage, and attendance records. Work may be assigned and performed in areas other than the masonry trade in a manner consistent with organizational and operational requirements of the institution or facility. Performs any and all job related duties as required. Essential Functions: ADA’s 1. Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates 2. Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary 3. Instruct and oversee inmates in the standard principles and practices of the masonry trade 4. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp 5. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels 6. Spend prolonged periods of time working indoors as well as outdoors in all weather conditions 7. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking 8. Work all shifts and posts as required by operational necessities and emergencies 9. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification 10. Maintain regular and reliable attendance 11. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in the masonry trade 12. Operate basic office equipment 13. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform 14. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing 15. Establish and maintain effective working relationships 16. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet) 17. Visually observe inmates’ activities 18. Administer emergency medical assistance to inmates and staff 19. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing 20. Travel as required |
