Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. This position is responsible for performing tasks in support of a comprehensive and interfaith religious services program within the Religious Services Department (RSD) at SCI Coal Twp. This work is performed in support of inmates of all faiths and no faith. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. The following duties are completed in accordance with all applicable policies, procedures, and guidelines: 60% Functions as an interfaith chaplain. Plans and conducts faith-specific primary religious gatherings for inmates who share his/her broad faith tradition, as well as, administers faith-appropriate sacraments, rites, and ceremonies such as sacrament of the sick, baptism, communion, smudging, etc. Facilitates and arranges for comparable accommodations for inmates of other faiths. Conducts spiritual, grief, and/or special counseling. Makes regular visits to inmates housed in general population housing units, as well as, specialized housing units. Makes non-routine visits to critically ill and/or end-of-life inmates who have been admitted to community hospitals. Assists in the oversight of religious activities for inmates to include the facilitation of structured spiritual discussion groups for inmates who have been identified as severely mentally ill. Screens and distributes approved religious and inspirational literature and items. 15% Represents the RSD on various committees and task forces and advises staff on matters related to religious beliefs and practices. Evaluates requests for religious accommodations and makes recommendations for approval, disapproval, and/or modification of requests. Participates in various interfaith events and speaking engagements to promote community understanding of facility religious programs. 15% Participates in the recruitment, selection, and training of RSD volunteers, public visitors, and interns. Assists with planning and coordinating the involvement of inmate volunteers with other program areas for the purpose of assisting with religious services. Orients department employees, volunteers, public visitors, and interns to the RSD. 5% Documents and maintains program records. Prepares standard and/or specialized reports and responds to requests for information in a timely fashion. 5% Performs other related duties. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Visually observe inmates’ activities 13. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet) |

Routine work assignments are managed independently while special assignments are discussed with the Facility Chaplaincy Program Director (FCPD) prior to implementation. Work is assigned and reviewed by the FCPD on a regular basis. This position seeks advice and direction from the FCPD in regards to unique and/or critical situations. |
