Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This is professional work to supervise the development, implementation, coordination and evaluation of environmental education (EE) as outlined in, but not limited to, the Pennsylvania Environmental Education Act. This includes supervising professional staff; managing the operation of the Pennsylvania Center for Environmental Education; evaluating EE that takes place outside the classroom; developing and implementing EE programs for citizens; and providing EE grants. It also includes working collaboratively with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR); and providing management and support to the Advisory Council on Environmental Education, to advise and assist the departments in carrying out EE programs.

The work duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Supervise and manage the operation of the Pennsylvania Center for Environmental Education
This supervision and management includes: planning for, managing, updating and evaluating the physical appearance of the Center; developing and managing creation of communications (e.g., publications, online presence, exhibits and in-person materials) that effectively represent Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP); and supervising an in-service program for teachers.

Evaluate EE that takes place outside the classroom
This supervision and management includes: providing management, resources and evaluations for the Pennsylvania Envirothon; writing and reviewing materials, articles, products, programs and services that help educate the citizens of the Commonwealths on protecting the environment; conducting and/or playing a role in conducting periodic evaluations of non-formal environmental education programs; attending relevant EE functions; and staying current in the efforts and findings of major state environmental education programs.

Develop and implement EE programs for citizens
This supervision and management includes: working collaboratively with other state agencies on promoting the understanding of peregrine falcons, through operation of the PA falcon-cam, dissemination of instructional material and workshops, and active management of volunteers who assist in observing the falcons; maintaining and promoting the use of and access to an inventory of EE materials, speakers, resources and interactive programs, coordinating in particular with the Pollution Prevention and Energy Assistance Office; and offering training on hands-on lessons as requested.

Provide EE grants
Supervision and management includes: overseeing the Department’s EE Grants Program, actively managing it to mesh with DEP’s identified EE goals; working with DEP’s accounting staff to keep aware of distribution of grant income, grant disbursements, and deliverables.

Provide management and support to the Advisory Council on Environmental Education
This supervision includes: working collaboratively with PDE and DCNR to manage the council, which advises and assists the departments in carrying out EE programs; preparing a periodic report to leadership that outlines EE programs and achievements, highlights new initiatives and recommends future program needs; and serving as the Secretary’s designee on the council.

Work collaboratively with relevant state agencies
This supervision and management includes: reviewing and working with PDE and DCNR to maintain strong coordination of mutual EE goals; reviewing work plans submitted by PDE; and reviewing reports and deliverables.

Supervise professional staff
This supervision and management includes: managing professional staff as assigned to this unit.

Meets weekly with the Director of Communications, to set strategic goals, and maintain close understanding of work progress and achievements. Meets regularly with staff, including but not limited to EE Regional Program Coordinator, and interns, to assign duties and evaluate achievements.
