Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position performs technical traffic duties involving design and review of basic to complex signal design, advanced traffic signal systems, and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) design.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Designs advanced traffic signal systems for the management of congestion and optimization of traffic flow in urbanized areas.

Develops specifications for advanced traffic signal systems and ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems).

Designs integrated signal systems on highly congested corridors.

Designs extensive closed-loop signal systems with preemption and reporting capabilities as well as traffic responsive operations and malfunction reporting.

Develops multi-intersection progression plans using various highway capacity and optimization software packages.

Reviews preliminary design and capacity analysis to assure incorporation of sound traffic principles.

Conducts and or reviews traffic signal warrant analyses for future signal projects.

Designs traffic signal installations including poles and signal placement, phasing, timing, conduit, wiring, coordination and all other required information.

Reviews traffic signal operation to assure conformance with design and traffic flow.

Reviews and makes recommendations regarding intersection design including channelization.

Develops design of other electrical traffic control devices such as flashing beacons and flashing warning devices.

As requested, aids in construction inspection of signal projects.

Confers with and advises principal officials and others regarding traffic signals and other traffic control devices.

Work with local officials to maximize the efficiency of their traffic signals.

Prepares written response letters to requests and complaints from local officials.

Operate ITS devices within the District Traffic Management Center.

Coordinate with District 2 RTMC for events and incidents.

Travel to field devices for repairs and troubleshooting failed equipment.

Report and issue work authorizations for repairs on failed equipment.

Evaluate the contractor’s operations: Immediately stop any unsafe actions. Engage in an ongoing safety dialogue with the contractor’s leadership.

Promote a CULTURE that emphasizes SAFETY as a core value: Immediately stop any unsafe actions. Incorporate safety into all discussions, deliberations, and decisions. Continuously communicate the safety direction. Inspire employees to be a MODEL for safety. Encourage and support safety initiatives and programs by participating and involving your staff. Recognize safety daily. Acknowledge EXTRAORDINARY achievements. Learn and improve through After Action Reviews (AARs). Enforce accountability.

Succession Planning Language:
Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees.

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA):
Unless directed otherwise by your supervisor or manager, comply with stated work hours for the 7.5/8.0 hour day.

Work is performed with considerable independence. Incumbent makes recommendations based on analysis and consideration of general traffic criteria. Recommendations are reviewed by the manager for adherence to traffic principles.
