Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. The purpose of this position is to support Cornplanter District staff through the performance of assigned technical forestry assignments that promote proper forest management and stewardship both on State Forest Lands and on other forested lands in the District. Assignments are scheduled weekly by supervisors. Daily check-ins with management personnel required. Schedules always subject to change based on direction from management. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. STEWARDSHIP: Assists Service Foresters with their collection of preliminary field data for stand analysis and the development of forest management plans (i.e. Stewardship Plans, etc.). As directed by management, assists in executing stewardship enhancement practices including but not exclusive to tree planting, timber stand improvement, wildlife habitat management, etc. FOREST MANAGEMENT: Obtains timber volumes by marking and/or cruising as prescribed by management on State Forest Lands, other State Lands and other cooperator's lands. Surveys and marks boundaries for timber sales and other projects specified by management. Assists foresters in the collection of field data for stand analysis, timber sales and other district projects. Assists foresters in the execution of wildlife habitat management activities. Under the direction of management and guidance of a forester with a pesticide applicator's license, treats invasive and competing trees and plants with herbicide applications. Conducts a variety of GPS work. Under the direction of management and guidance of a forester, collects seed for delivery to MLD Nursery. FOREST PEST MANAGEMENT: Assists district personnel and the District Forest Health Coordinator with ground checking and other insect and disease detection activities including spongy moth control activities. Under the direction of management and under the guidance of foresters, assists with chemical treatment of tree species threatened by insects and/or diseases. FOREST FIRE PROTECTION: Under the direction of management, assists district personnel with wildfire prevention, pre-suppression and suppression activities. INFORMATION AND EDUCATION: Under the direction of management, assists district personnel with the development of displays, exhibits and other education materials. Under the direction of management, assists with the development and updating of district promotional items (trail maps, brochures, information packets, etc.) As directed by management, occasionally assists Foresters in preparation and support of programs/presentations, and appearing, with Foresters, as a District Representative at fairs, festivals, Envirothons, etc. MAINTENANCE: Assists district personnel with the upkeep and general appearance of District facilities including but not inclusive to trail clearing, lawn mowing, tree trimming, State Forest Boundary line maintenance, trail marking, trash/garbage removal, etc. OTHER RELATED ACTIVITIES AND DUTIES: Performs other related activities and duties that are necessary for the efficient operation of the Cornplanter Forest District, as directed by management. |
