Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The purpose of this position is to provide nursing care and treatment services to individuals with mental or physical injury or illness, dysfunctional behavior and/or a development disability.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

75% - Implements nursing care plans as assigned and directed by the Corrections Health Care Administrator (CHCA), Nurse Supervisor or Physician by checking vital signs, administering medications, performing treatments, utilizing restorative techniques and activities of daily living, and reinforcing education to ensure quality service is provided. Assesses inmate needs and reassigns staff as necessary to complete nursing care and treatment. Administers oral, intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous medication to inmates under the direction of a clinician’s orders and in accordance with functions as defined in state law and established agency/institution policies and procedures. Assists the physician in conducting physical examinations and in general, chronic care and specialty clinics. Administers treatments, immunizations, tuberculin, and other testing and screenings. Provides health counseling and education to patients. Performs direct care, or assists ambulatory, non-ambulatory, handicapped inmates with activities of daily living and hygiene to ensure basic physical care needs are met. Performs assessment and administers emergency medical treatment including first aid, CPR, or AED and refers to a CRNP (Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner), Physician Assistant, Physician, or local hospital emergency room. Adheres to all infection control and quality improvement procedures and requirements. Performs as a charge nurse or staff nurse providing nursing care and treatment services in a Commonwealth correctional facility.

10% - Receives and provides shift reports to ensure continuity of patient care and dissemination of all information. Communicates necessary information to Shift Commander, custody staff, and CHCA in the event of medical emergencies or situations that arise which affect the normal operations of the department. Records, retrieves, and files information in the electronic health record. Reviews medical records and prepares reports for inmate transfer or release. Ensures timely completion and submission of daily and monthly written reports, as requested or assigned in order to meet expected deadlines. Maintains records of all controlled substances and narcotics.

5% - Sterilizes supplies and instruments using chemical and steam methods. Inventories supplies and equipment and maintains adequate stock of all treatment areas.

5% - Maintains and improves job skills by attendance at mandatory in-service, out-service, meetings and voluntary training programs and knowing DOC and facility policy and procedure changes when they occur.

5% - Performs other related duties as required.

10. Visually observe inmates’ activities
11. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
12. Attends and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing.
13. Work overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
14. Travel as required

Decision Making:

Work is performed with considerable independence. Assignments are made both verbally and in writing. Determines appropriate professional nursing care and treatment services required to meet individual inmate needs within the scope of RN license. Advises or refers to the Nursing Supervisor or Corrections Health Care Administrator when inmate health conditions and treatment needs change.
