Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The employee is assigned to the Therapeutic Activities Department at Torrance State Hospital. The primary responsibility of an employee in this class is to design, implement, and evaluate therapeutic activities segments of individual program plans to further comprehensive treatment of patients. Programs may overlap or combine various aspects of therapeutic recreation, occupational therapy, or vocational adjustment services. The employee participates with the treatment team in the development of individual patients' treatment plan, having assessed functional levels, strengths/needs, formulating recommendations for responding to assessed needs. The employee selects therapeutic activities to meet identifed needs, monitors and reports patient progress, adapting therapeutic activities if indicated. The employee attends and participates in meetings involving clinical issues, maintains clinical records for patients ranging in age from 18 years through 90+.

Work Effort Statement:
* Develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates therapeutic activities segments of comprehensive individual patient treatment plan.
* Develops specifically planned therapeutic activities goals and objectives to implement therapeutic activities segments of comprehensive individual patient treatment plan.
* Attends and participates in multidisciplinary team meetings, provides recommendations regarding specific therapeutic activities methods in treatment plan.
* Provides on-going review and evaluation of patients needs and progress toward achieving program goals.
* Screens and prepares referrals to other therapeutic activities.
* Completes individual assessments and required documentation per established guidelines.
* Selects/assigns patients into therapeutic groups in conjunction with treatment team decision.
* Conducts therapeutic groups/treatment sessions in a variety of program areas such as recreation, socialization, sensory awareness, leisure activities, community trips, etc., scorting patients, assuming responsibility for their needs and safety,
recording attendance.
* Integrates therapeutic activities services with services provided by other clinical disciplines.

¨ Provides documentation on patients’ progress toward established treatment goals per established guidelines.
¨ Coordinates scheduling of space, equipment and staff for therapeutic activities within assigned areas. Maintains work area/equipment at optimal conditions, promoting safety/cleanliness.
¨ Provides supervision/direction as assigned to therapeutic activities aides, students, volunteers; maintains records, ensures documentation.
¨ Establishes effective and cooperative working relationships with other staff, maintaining objectivity and diplomacy.
¨ Participates in in-service and out-service training to keep abreast of theory and methods in the field of therapeutic activities.
¨ Participates in appropriate clinical administrative committees and conferences.
¨ Participates in performance improvement through monitoring/evaluating efforts as assigned.
¨ May conduct in-service training for aides, students, volunteers, or other staff.
¨ Participates as a member of a team conducting/assisting in special building events as scheduled.
¨ Performs related duties as required to meet needs of department and hospital in compliance with DHS, Torrance State Hospital and departmental rules, regulations, and guidelines.

· Gathers, analyzes, and evaluates information, maintains necessary administrative and clinical records, requisitions supplies/equipment needed for the implementation of therapeutic activities services.
· Interprets and applies manual policies, procedures, regulations. Understands and interprets oral and written instructions, communicates with hospital staff.
· Designs, conducts, and evaluates therapeutic activities segments of individual program plans in accordance with patients’ functional levels, strengths, needs.
· Observes and reports, orally and in writing or in any other manner, patient behavior, attitude, physical condition, progress toward established treatment goals.
· Trains/supervises a Therapeutic Activities Aide, providing instruction, direction, and support in conducting individual and group therapeutic activities, evaluates staff effectiveness.
· Works effectively with patients to fully utilize their potential, assist them in adjusting to their problems, and involve them in therapeutic activities programs.
· Recognizes occupational hazards, follows safety precautions.
· Remains cognizant of issues of confidentiality.

Essential Functions
