Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Under the direction of an Automotive Mechanic Supervisor or Equipment Manager, the incumbent performs a variety of independent skilled trades duties in the repair of parts, structural welding of bridge members, repairs to frames on equipment, hitches, plows, fabricates repair parts and body parts for a variety of applications using oxy-acetylene, electric arc, heli-arc, or other similar types of equipment to join metals. An employee in this job performs a variety of welding duties involving welding, brazing and metal-cutting jobs on ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Work may involve modifying, customizing, and fabricating equipment or parts. Work also involves responsibility for exercising independent judgment in determining work methods and procedures and may include lead work over helpers. Assignments are received orally and in writing from a foreman or other supervisor who inspects the work in progress or upon completion. Perform efficient/quality diagnosis, repairs and modifications of department equipment and facilities. Respond satisfactorily to emergency call outs. Participates in the Required Medical Surveillance testing and monitoring as required by PPIM 09-107 Maintains a small inventory of different types and sizes of steel and aluminum. As needed, assists with grounds maintenance. Performs related duties as required. Maintains assigned work area in a clean, safe condition using proper safety procedures and protective equipment. Is aware of work area hazards and initiates proactive accident and injury avoidance measures. Reports all personal injuries immediately and gets proper treatment to minimize risk of further injury. Maintains a safe work environment for self, co-workers by following proper safety procedures and using protective equipment. Makes visual observations, manual adjustments, reports findings in both written and oral format. Maintains awareness of work area helping self and others to avoid risks and hazards; reports all personal injuries and equipment accident immediately and gets proper treatment to minimize risk of further injury. Recognizing that everyone is involved in the District’s and County’s actions to demonstrate sound environmental practices, each employee fulfills the maintenance unit business plan objectives related to the Strategic Environmental Management Program (SEMP). Attends environmental training as required. Safety: 1. Assess your environment and be responsible for your safety, the safety of co-workers, and the public. 2. Attend required safety training and adhere to the requirements of all safety manuals, policies, and laws. 3. Immediately report to your supervisor any incident, unsafe practice, or near miss. 4. When in an enclosed environment (office buildings, confined spaces, flagger stations, equipment pinch points, etc.), know your evacuation process and escape route, your communication protocols, and appropriately react in the event of an incident. 5. Evaluate contractor operations: Immediately stop unsafe actions Engage in ongoing safety dialogue with the contractor’s leadership. 6. Promote a CULTURE that emphasizes SAFETY as a core value: Immediately stop any unsafe actions. Incorporate safety into all discussions, deliberations, and decisions. Continuously communicate the safety direction. Inspire employees to be a MODEL for safety. Encourage and support safety initiatives and programs by participating and involving staff. Recognize safety daily. Acknowledge EXTRAORDINARY achievements. Learn and improve through After Action Reviews (AAR’s) Enforce accountability. Succession Planning: Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees. Department Green Plan Policy: Commit to following the Department’s Green Plan Policy (Pub 712) and the associated principles. Failure to comply with the Department’s Green Plan Policy shall be documented in the employee’s performance review. Fair Labor Standards Act: Unless directed otherwise by your supervisor or manager, comply with stated work hours for the 7.5/8.0-hour day. |

Communicate effectively with customers internally and externally to identify necessary repairs or recommend replacement when not cost effective, and with the stockroom on material needs and inventory. |
