Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Conducts routine and complex investigations into allegations of violations of the laws, rules, and regulations in other areas under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of the Commonwealth, including, but not limited to, the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs; Bureau of Commissions, Elections, and Legislation; and the State Athletic Commission. Conducts investigative activities to support the Bureau mission. Travels to various sites in a geographic area of the state to conduct investigations and inspections by observation, interviews, and fact gathering, noting any deviation from established standards, and preparing reports to communicate findings. Acts as lead investigator on more sensitive investigations when necessary. Assists less experienced investigators in planning, organizing, and conducting investigations. Provides general guidance and assistance upon requests from other investigators and/or the supervisor. Plans, organizes, and coordinates investigations and confers with supervisor or designee on progress. This includes, but is not limited to, reviewing the initial complaint to determine the relevant issues, establishing an investigative plan, interviewing the appropriate persons, gathering the needed evidence, and reducing the issues into a clear, concise written report. Required to keep confidential the identities and locations of interviewees and evidence obtained in executing duties. Types required reports completely and accurately relating findings of any given investigation or activity. Contacts persons to make appointments and for other work-related matters. Attends training sessions to maintain and expand their knowledge and skills. Provides training as requested by the supervisor to relate knowledge and skills to less experienced investigative staff. Keeps supervisor aware of activities by discussing projected tasks and locations for any given time frame. Testifies at formal and informal hearings and appears as a witness for the State in formal judicial proceedings. Travels to and from work sites as necessary. Be available for temporary reassignment statewide, as necessary, when directed. Operate general equipment including, but not limited to, computers, mobile devices, copiers, scanners, cameras, etc. Performs related duties as required. |

Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature. Job duties are performed with minimal supervision. The employee gathers facts, reviews, and evaluates information received and initiates appropriate action relative to all assignments, issues, problems and concerns within responsibility and authority. Decisions involving routine courses of action to successfully complete investigative assignments, including generation of an investigative plan, scheduling interviews, conducting research, etc. will be done by the employee. Additionally, decisions when acting as the team leader regarding normal joint investigative activities will be done by the employee. Decisions involving situations outside the norm, exceeding Bureau mandated timelines, approval of investigative finalized reports and requests requiring the use of the chain-of-command will be approved by the Supervisor. |
