Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Serve as an assistant to the Clinical Services Manager in planning, organizing, and directing the administrative and clinical functions of the Nursing Department for Southwestern Veterans' Center.

Description of Duties:

12% Provide input into the development of policies to assure compliance with the Department of Health, Department of Public Welfare, VA, DMVA and all other rules and regulations.

10% Oversee and participate in the observation of residents’ conditions; ensure changes are reported to appropriate staff. Record daily care performed for the residents on the appropriate forms and the approved electronic medical record.

10% Perform supervisory duties to include; scheduling and assigning work; evaluating performance; approving/denying leave requests; initiating progressive disciplinary measures; and conducting performance management. Interview prospective employees and make hiring recommendations.

10% Inspect nursing units for regulatory compliance and to address resident care needs. Assess and evaluate the content and quality of nursing team treatment plans to meet resident needs and nursing standards.

8% Attend committee meetings as directed by the Clinical Services Manager and serve as chairperson for assigned committees.

7% Participate in the resolution of staff problems by reviewing grievances and complaints, conducting investigations, holding discussions with employees, and recommending solutions. Attend offsite hearings such as Workers Compensation, Unemployment Compensation, Civil Service, etc. as needed.

6% Actively support QAPI efforts by championing the QAPI efforts in all clinical areas. Assist the Commandant with developing QAPI goals, ensure sufficient resources are applied to QAPI efforts (including staff), support non-clinical QAPI efforts as necessary, promote Root Cause Analysis (RCA) in solving clinical problems, manage all clinical processes, and identify opportunities for improvement.

6% Participate in the ordering of supplies and the monitoring of service purchase contracts.

5% Participate in the Nursing Department Continuous Quality Assurance Program. Review nursing unit reports and give direction as needed.

5% Participate in the scheduling of nursing staff preferred vacations. Respond to telephone calls on off duty hours for emergencies/problems, and come to the facility if needed. Makes rounds on off shifts (3-11 and 11-7) at least twice per month and as directed by the D.O.N.

5% Participate in continuing education and mandatory in-service programs to enhance nursing and leadership skills. Satisfactorily complete all required competencies.

5% Performs work in accordance with the DMVA general safety rules and safety rules for this position. Immediately reports all workplace injuries or incidents to the supervisor; and/or immediately corrects any safety hazards in the work area or reports same to supervisor.

3% Receive and evaluate bed and room change requests to ensure maintenance of resident rights.

2% Orient supervisors to each unit and routine. Explain schedules, time and attendance, supplemental services, performance evaluations, organization charts, intra and inter-departmental meetings, and other related supervisory duties.

2% As needed, participate in the work of subordinates.

1% Assist with the planning of new employee orientations. This includes explanations of this institution’s policies and procedures, assigning new employees to units, checking on their progress, and evaluating their performance.

1% Attend off site evaluations of residents.

2% Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Essential Functions
