Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Under the guidance of supervisors, managers, and other staff, this position participates in a structured, progressive, on-the-job training program to learn and employ the full range of analytical, preventative maintenance, and repair duties for construction equipment, trucks, and automobiles, powered by gasoline or diesel engines.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Participates in the completion of the repair and overhaul of cars, trucks, and other heavy equipment; learns to maintain and repair equipment such as sweepers, mixers, and front-end loaders; identifies needed repairs, and assists with the replacement of shock absorbers, transmissions, hour meters, clutches, brakes, and other parts. Assists with wheel balancing and alignment checks, makes minor body repairs, and tests, repairs, or replaces alternators and electrical components.

Participates in preventative maintenance operations on vehicles and equipment.

Participates in the completion of automotive mechanical diagnostics, tune-ups, and tire changes; the repair and replacement of engine subassemblies; the repair and adjustment of cooling, suspension, electrical, heating and air-conditioning components; the maintenance of fuel injection, brake, steering and transmission systems; and the repair or rebuild of construction or shop equipment.

Participates in the completion of official state inspections for safety and emissions, when applicable, on vehicles as assigned; to perform repairs to ensure compliance with specifications, perform road tests of vehicles, complete inspection stickers and affix to vehicles, and complete State Inspection Records and related inspection forms and records.

Identifies equipment problems using diagnostic equipment and procedures; and assists with determining problems, repair methods, procedures, tools, and required parts. Learns to repair and maintain motorized hand equipment such as chain saws, compressors, jackhammers, tampers, hand mowers and trimmers, routers, patching machines, and heating kettles. Reports missing parts or broken equipment, recommends orders for replacement parts as necessary.

Ensures assigned work area is maintained, clean, and in safe condition. Learns to properly utilize and employ appropriate safety procedures and protective equipment. Learns to identify and mitigate work area hazards and initiate proactive accident and injury avoidance measures. Trains in the completion of personal injury reports, and obtaining proper treatment to mitigate risk of further injury.

Participates in routine field adjustments to permit safe operation and minimize wear. Learns and performs appropriate repair techniques on assigned equipment; assists other staff in making major repairs to equipment. Maintains equipment records.

Identifies and completes appropriate visual observations and manual adjustments; and completes reports of findings in both written and oral format.

Implements appropriate environmental protection requirements in all maintenance work activities to fulfill the environmental management requirements.

Safety:

3. Immediately report to your supervisor any incident, unsafe practice, or near miss.
4. When in an enclosed environment (office buildings, confined spaces, flagger stations, equipment pinch points, etc.), know your evacuation process and escape route, your communication protocols, and appropriately react in the event of an incident.

Succession Planning:
Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees.

Green Plan Policy:
Commit to following the Department's Green Plan Policy (Pub 712) and the associated principles. Failure to comply with the Department Green Plan policy shall be documented in employee's performance review.

Unless directed otherwise by your supervisor or manager, comply with stated work hours for the 7.5/8.0 hour day.

Experience:

1.Must obtain an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.

2.Must pass PennDOT’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.

3.Certain positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit or License on the first day of employment.

4.Certain positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class B Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.

5.Certain positions require the possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.

6.Certain positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.

7.Certain positions require possession of an active Hazardous Materials Endorsement (H).

8.Certain positions require possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N).
