Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Provides on-the-job training and shop instruction for the vocational training of inmates in the welding trade in support of the overall goals and objectives of the Maintenance Department.

Description of Duties:

The employee assigned to this position provides on-the-job training and shop instruction for the vocational training of inmates in the welding trade.

Work involves the instruction of inmates in the practices, methods and procedures of the welding trade by demonstration, explanation and close supervision.

Employee is responsible for the custody and discipline of inmates assigned to him during training and work assignments.

Instructs inmates and assists in the maintenance and repair of rails, pipes, metal, screens, windows, doors, radiators, water tanks and other metal equipment using arc, gas and tack welding techniques as well as brazing and cutting procedures.

Instructs inmates and assists in the installation of new doors, window screens, grills and other metal items by utilizing proper welding skills and knowledge of teaching practices to insure proper installation.

Performs preventive maintenance on light equipment throughout the Institution by lubricating, inspecting and adjusting equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and Institutional policies in order to prevent breakdowns and extend the life of Institutional equipment.

Fabricates and repairs equipment by welding, cutting, brazing or soldering.

Plans and assigns work to inmates receiving welding training, reviews and inspects work in progress and upon completion for adherence to welding trade standards.

Issues and collects tools, supplies, materials and equipment.

Requisitions materials, supplies and equipment by submitting a material list from vendor with price quotes to CFMM I for input into the computer APR system.

Maintains order and discipline among inmate workers and searches inmates and work areas for contraband and ensures security of work areas.

Maintains maintenance and repair records, training progress, inventory, wage and attendance records.

Provides required formal classroom instruction for all assigned inmates from a prepare lesson plan.

Performs other related work as required.

Corrections Welding Trade Instructor

1. Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates
2. Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary
3. Instruct and oversee inmates in the standard principles and practices of the welding trade
4. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp
5. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
6. Spend prolonged periods of time working indoors as well as outdoors in all weather conditions
7. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking
8. Work all shifts and posts as required by operational necessities and emergencies
9. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification
10. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
11. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in the welding trade
12. Operate basic office equipment
13. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform
14. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
15. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
16. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
17. Visually observe inmates’ activities
18. Administer emergency medical assistance to inmates and staff
19. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
20. Travel as required
