Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This is a professional level position assigned to the Therapeutic Activities Department at Norristown State Hospital. The employee’s primary responsibility is to develop, facilitate & evaluate therapeutic activities based on assessment of individuals’ strengths & treatment needs. Programs will primarily serve individuals in the civil section of the hospital which also includes forensic step down units. Under the direction of a Therapeutic Activities Services Supervisor, the employee provides a variety of vocational opportunities in the workshop, greenhouse or on unit for assigned individuals. Employee monitors & reports progress toward treatment objectives. Employee is responsible for coordinating & documenting the Patient Worker Program in the forensic unit. Programs provided may overlap or combine various aspects of vocational training, therapeutic recreation, &/or occupational therapy. The employee is a member of an assigned treatment team & will contribute to the development of patients’ individual treatment/recovery plans, making recommendations for treatment objectives & interventions.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

• Develops, implements, monitors & evaluates therapeutic activities segments of patients’ Individual Comprehensive Treatment/Recovery Plan (ICTRP) which may include aspects of vocational training, therapeutic recreation &/or occupational therapy.
• Develops specifically planned therapeutic activities to meet individuals’ identified treatment goals & objectives as part of the overall ICTRP.
• Conducts programs as assigned in various treatment areas of the hospital including but not limited to the Workshop, Greenhouse, Wellness Center, Little Theater, OT shop, music room, etc.
• Attends & participates in treatment team meetings & other multidisciplinary clinical meetings as assigned to provide updates on an individual’s progress toward treatment objectives & make recommendations for specific therapeutic activities & modalities.
• Monitors & documents progress toward treatment objectives for individuals as assigned.
• Completes individual assessments & other required documentation within established timeframes & according to hospital policy & regulatory standards, i.e., Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
• Makes recommendations to the treatment team & the individual for appropriate therapeutic program assignments based on the individual’s identified strengths & needs and recovery goals.
• Assists with escorting of individuals to program areas, assuming responsibility for their needs & general safety.
• Conducts/assists with various therapeutic activities, both unit-based & in/out of building as directed by supervisor or the Director of Therapeutic Activities.
• Assigns/modifies assignments of individuals to appropriate treatment programs with input from the treatment team.
• Modifies program content, location/environment &/or specific modalities utilized to ensure a safe treatment environment


Essential Job Functions:

3. Able to communicate effectively both orally & in writing.
4. Conduct career counseling/info sessions and make referrals to OVR as per WIOA.
5. Complete daily production, attendance and payroll reports for each patient
participating in a work program.
6. Able to navigate multiple stairs in order to access patient units & program areas.
7. May be required to transport equipment/supplies using VAS van to other work areas
as needed.
8. Travel, as needed, to provide assist with &/or programs indoors on campus, outdoors
on campus & at approved, planned destinations in the community.
9. Maintains a safe & therapeutic treatment environment in all assigned areas.
10. Performs other duties as needed or assigned.
11. Successfully completes New Employee & Annual Required Training including Crisis
Intervention & Response/Mandt.
