Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. Develops and oversees mission-related educational programming for the Erie Maritime Museum. Conceives new programs, improves existing programs, and supervises the day-to-day operation of those programs. Coordinates visitor services, recruits & trains volunteers and staff engaged in museum educational and interpretive activities, and presents classroom study courses, lectures, traveling exhibits, audio-visual displays, and similar instructional programs based upon museum and field site collections and activities. Performs research in support of the museum’s educational and interpretive activities. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. 20% - Responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of museum education and visitor services operations for the museum. Develops, implements, and evaluates the museum’s educational and interpretive programs based upon primary and secondary historical research and analysis of current applicable museum teaching methodology. Work involves researching, developing, and presenting lectures, tours, audio-visual programs, preparing lesson plans, scripts, or other methods of presentation, and presenting the material through lectures, classroom instruction, or other methods. Manages major and minor museum programming in coordination with PHMC & community partner staff. 25% - Trains museum staff on issues associated with accessibility for all audiences . Develops educational programs for special audiences and trains staff to present them. Responsible for developing interpretive manuals, handouts, and brochures. As Volunteer Coordinator, develops and implements volunteer recruitment, scheduling, & training. In coordination with museum staff develops and implements staff training programs. Serves as museum accessibility expert/advocate. Evaluates performance of interpretive guide staff for accuracy of information. Manages and coordinates interns and student workers. 15% - Trains museum staff and volunteers on giving tours onboard the U.S. Brig Niagara when in homeport berth at Erie Maritime Museum. Trains ship’s crew in technique and historical content for presenting the ship to visitors in ports other than Erie. Training includes safety aspects of escorting visitors through the brig, being mindful of low overheads, steep ladders, numerous tripping hazards, etc. Researches and presents to guides appropriate historical content for varying length tours, and techniques for engaging visitors. In conjunction with sailing staff, develops curriculum materials for interpretive programs underway on day sails onboard Niagara. Sails on the museum’s ships/boats occasionally to become familiar with sailing ship operations and maritime history. 15% - Coordinates visitor services including but not limited to: coordination of staff and volunteer schedules to assure adequate visitor services and program coverage, issuing of keys and radios, welcoming and checking in groups, checking to ensure comfort facilities are clean and well stocked, and making sure all public areas are clean, safe and presentable for the variety of audiences visiting the museum. Books all museum group tour reservations and confirms that preparations for the visits have been made. Sends or ensures that pre-visit materials are sent to each group. Ensures daily security checks of the museum are conducted. 5% - Provides support and input into the preparation of publicity and public relations materials including newsletters, calendars, signs, fliers, and press releases in coordination with marketing staff or contractors engaged on behalf of the museum. 5% - Assists in strategic and interpretive planning. Works with staff to implement elements of existing interpretive plan. Assists with and or serves as lead author on grant writing efforts. Represents museum on regional task forces and committees as assigned. 5% - Ensures museum point of sale (POS) system is operational and works with Clerk Assistant 3 on POS reconciliation and monitoring. Works with CA3 reporting visitation and site revenue to the Bureau of Historic Sites and Museums. 5% - Incumbent is responsible to be familiar with PHMC general safety rules and safety rules specific to this position; for working in a safe manner and following all PHMC safety rules; immediately reporting all workplace injuries or incidents to their supervisor; and to immediately correct any safety hazards in the work area or report same to supervisor. Enforces all safety rules, procedures, and work practices and acts to correct unsafe conditions in the workplace. 5% - Other duties as assigned. |
