Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The purpose of the position is to produce test data on coarse and fine aggregates, anti-skid material, and cement and cement
related materials.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

• Performs a variety of tests on coarse and fine aggregates, anti-skid material, cement and cement related materials in accordance with American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO), ASTM International (ASTM), and Pennsylvania Test Method (PTM) test methods. The tests performed include but are not limited to AASHTO T-84 and
T-85 – Specific Gravity and Absorption of Coarse and Fine Aggregate, PTM-510 – Soundness of Aggregate by use of Sodium Sulfate, PTM-616 – Sieve Analysis of Coarse and Fine Aggregate, AASHTO T-96 Resistance to Degradation of Small-Size Coarse Aggregate by Abrasion and Impact in the Los Angeles Machine, AASHTO T-137 – Air Content of Hydraulic Cement Mortar, AASHTO T-106 – Compressive Strength of Hydraulic Cement Mortar, and AASHTO T-107 – Autoclave Expansion of Hydraulic Cement. The tests are performed from start to finish producing data for review by
the section supervisor and manager.

• Performs testing in a proficient and accurate manner to ensure that materials meet the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) established quality and management objectives for ratings on AASHTO re:source and/or Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL) proficiency samples.

• Performs a variety of duties related to the preparing of materials for additional testing within the section or for transferring material to another section for additional testing. The duties performed include but are not limited to splitting out aggregate for transfer to the Concrete and/or Chemistry sections and splitting out aggregate for petrographic analysis.

• Ensures all equipment is in proper working order by visual daily inspections and weekly to monthly maintenance such a lubrication of moving parts and cleaning of the equipment. Calibrates testing equipment as necessary to stay in compliance with AASHTO R 18 Standard Practice for Establishing and Implementing a Quality Management System for Construction
Materials Testing Laboratories accreditation.

• Maintains equipment calibration and maintenance logs.

• Keeps work area clean and orderly as required by the section manager and the Building Maintenance Manager.

• Performs other related duties as required.

Safety

3. Immediately report to your supervisor any incident, unsafe practice, or near miss.
4. When in an enclosed environment (office buildings, confined spaces, flagger stations, equipment pinch points, etc.), know your evacuation process and escape route, your communication protocols, and appropriately react in the event of an incident.

Succession Planning
Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees.

Department Green Plan Policy As part of PennDOT’s MS4 obligations including NPDES Permit compliance and stockpile good housekeeping, commit to following the Departments Green Plan Policy (Pub 712) and the associated principals. Failure to comply with Department
Green Plan Policy shall be documented in employee’s performance review.

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Unless directed by your supervisor or manager, comply with stated work hours for the 7.5/8.0 hour day.
