This position provides limited psychological services to address the mental health and general emotional adjustment needs of the inmate population at SCI Mercer. |
Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Provides counseling and limited therapy to inmates or inmate groups employing techniques approved by or selected in consultation with a licensed psychologist or Psychological Services Specialist. Group counseling topics include, but are not limited to, re-socialization, prison adjustment, offense specific behaviors, treatment plan goals, and/or specific skills such as relaxation training, anger management skills, and sleep hygiene. Assists in the selection and use of psychological techniques designed to modify and/or manage inmate behavior under the direction and close oversight of licensed psychologist or administrative superior. Conducts individual inmate interviews and tests for evaluation and to determine preliminary course of action at the direction and with the close oversight of a licensed psychologist or administrative superior. Assists in the administration, scoring and interpretation of standard pre-selected instruments or psychological tests chosen in consultation with a licensed psychologist or Psychological Services Specialist. Discusses test results, findings, interpretations and recommendations with a licensed psychologist, higher-level specialist or administrative superior for approval / disapproval. Refers or recommends referral of inmates to a higher-level specialist or licensed psychologist for specialized testing, assessment or therapeutic intervention. Facilitates the delivery of direct services to individual inmates through coordination and consultation with other institutional departments, other agencies and state mental health facilities. Prepares case formulations recommending therapy or counseling interventions for the approval of the licensed psychologist. Prepares behavior modification plans for the review and approval of a licensed psychologist. Assists in research studies designed by or in consultation with a licensed psychologist to maximize the effectiveness of a psychological services program at a state correctional institution. Performs other related duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Exercise therapeutic care, custody, and control over inmates 2. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing 3. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing 8. Work overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement 9. Travel as required 10. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels 11. Visually observe inmates’ activities 12. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet) |

Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature. Work is assigned and reviewed by a Licensed Psychology Manager (LPM) on a regular basis through monthly department head meetings, individual supervisory meetings and annual employment evaluations. New work is explained verbally, as well as in writing whenever possible. Assignments are performed under the close supervision of the LPM who provides direction during crisis intervention or other critical decision making. |
