Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Drive, deploy, operate and maintain the inspection crane providing access to structures inspection and maintenance activities and perform structure inspections according to Department policies and procedures for ensuring a safe transportation system.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Transport the inspection crane, shadow truck, traffic control devices and other equipment to bridge sites.
Operate and deploy the inspection crane in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and Department procedures to safely provide access to structures.
Provide and maintain a safe work zone utilizing required traffic control devices and equipment according to Publication 213.

Maintain all assigned equipment according to established maintenance schedules and procedures and perform repairs and adjustments on equipment as needed.
Assist in the coordination of equipment maintenance activities with Department Equipment Managers and outside vendors.
Assist in the coordination with Department Maintenance Units and railroads both orally and in writing to provide the required equipment and support staff needed to safely access structures.
Assist in the preparation of the annual crane schedule and attend scheduling meetings.
As a certified bridge safety inspector, perform structure inspections according to Department policies and procedures utilizing a ladder, boat, ultrasonic thickness gage, fathometer, grinder, drill, hand tools and other related inspection equipment as needed.
Prepare structure inspection reports using appropriate forms, sketches, photographs and electronic equipment.
Update the Bridge Management System (BMS2) to reflect data from inspection reports, structure plans, and other sources.
Utilize computer technology wherever practical including but not limited to the BMS2, I-Forms and PC business software.
Retrieve data from files, plans, the BMS2, PC or other sources.
Participate in drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal regulations as required for CDL operators.
Overnight travel and overtime is often required.
Perform other related work as directed by the Bridge Inspection Crane Technician Supervisor.

4. When in an enclosed environment (office buildings, confined spaces, flagger stations, equipment pinch points, etc.), know your evacuation process and escape route, your communication protocols, and appropriately react in the event of an incident.

Provide technical guidance to any back-up equipment operators assigned to the crane operation.
Assess the safety of crane maneuvers knowing the limitations of the equipment, the manufacturer’s recommendations and Department procedures and operate the crane accordingly.
Determine traffic control requirements based on site conditions.
