Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Interview inmates to ascertain educational status, objectives, and appropriate placement. Provide daytime school orientation to inmates. Assess inmates' education needs through the use of various testing instruments. Place inmates into appropriate classes based on test scores, educational background, and personal information. Gather and record educational information into student files (DC 47C's). Counsel students on appropriate behavior, attitude and career development problems relative to their participation in academic programs. Assist instructional staff through preventative and crisis intervention techniques. Provides educational guidance to inmates in selecting and enrolling in academic/vocational training based upon interests, experiences, and aptitude. Maintain confidentiality with information received. Prepare reports of students involved in educational programming while at Phoenix. Monitor enrollment and assist teachers in maintaining full enrollment in classes. Attend student staffings as needed. Update student educational records on individual progress and performance. Community & Institutional Liaison for educational programs and coordinating related services. Participate on all committees concerning academic curriculum and program changes. Ensures Special Education needs are met and maintained under IDEA 2004 parameters. Respond in writing to inmate requests within five (5) working days. Maintain effective written and oral communication with staff members. Act as GED testing examiner in the GED Testing Program. Computer literate in Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of Federal & State Special Education regulations. Orders supplies and materials to support guidance and counseling services. Responsible for therapeutic care, custody, and control of inmates. Attends required DOC & BCE training. Completes job related duties as assigned by Supervisor. Act as an Alternate Examiner in the GED Testing Program Administer TABE to inmates who are new enrollments in School. Administer TABE to Classification inmates. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1. Exercise therapeutic care, custody, and control over inmates 2. Counsel and guide inmates in the participation of educational and training programs 3. Maintain an active Educational Specialist 1 or 2 certification issued by the PA Department of Education in accordance with assigned work 4. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels 5. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking 6. Maintain regular and reliable attendance 7. Operate basic office equipment 8. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing 9. Establish and maintain effective working relationships 10. Visually observe inmates’ activities 11. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing 12. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet) 13. Work overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement 14. Travel as required |
