Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. 25% Develops and provides counseling and therapy to inmates or inmate groups, employing techniques which are most appropriate to modify and/or manage inmate behavior. Group counseling topics include, but are not limited to, re-socialization, prison adjustment, offense-specific behaviors, treatment plan goals, and/or specific skills such as relaxation training, anger management skills, and sleep hygiene. Individual Psychotherapy is provided to those inmates who present significant emotional disorders and are amenable to treatment. Schedules inmates for appointments with the contract psychiatrist as necessary. 25% Conducts individual inmate interviews and tests for evaluation and to determine preliminary course of action. Administers, scores, and interprets standard preselected instruments or psychological tests. Prepares initial psychological reports pertaining to test results, intellectual capabilities, and academic achievement. Refers or recommends referral of inmates to a higher-level specialist or licensed psychologist for specialized testing, assessment, or therapeutic intervention. Prepares behavior modification plans and case formulations recommending therapy or counseling interventions. 15% Facilitates the delivery of direct services to individual inmates through coordination and consultation with other institutional departments, other agencies, and state mental health facilities. 5% Assists in research studies designed by or in consultation with a licensed psychologist to maximize the effectiveness of a psychological services program at a state correctional institution. 5% Provides guidance to student interns assigned to the Psychology Department and provides relevant experience in testing, scoring, and interpretation of the initial psychological test. 5% Provides crisis intervention on an "as needed" basis to assess housing unit inmates and is available to the assessment housing unit staff. 5% Serves as a voting member of the Support Team for all inmates who have completed or are currently participating in my Group Counseling Sessions. Provides information as needed for vote processing on inmates with psychological stability scores of three (3) or greater. 5% Serves as a Mental Health Liaison. Maintains a current list on county mental health centers and provides this information to counselors for inmates who will require these services upon release. 5% Serves as a member for various institutional committees (Assessment/Reclassification, Program Review, Community Reentry, Parole, Crisis Intervention, Mental Health Review) as directed by the Deputy Superintendent for Centralized Services or the Corrections Classification and Program Manager. 5% Performs other related duties as assigned. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing 8. Work overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement 9. Travel as required 10. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels. 11. Visually observe inmates’ activities 12. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet) |

Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature. This position manages a caseload of inmates independently. Work is assigned and reviewed by the LPM on a regular basis through monthly department head meetings, individual supervisory meetings, and annual employment evaluations. New work is explained verbally as well as in writing whenever possible. This position seeks advice and direction from the LPM during crisis intervention or other critical decision-making. |
