Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. The purpose of this position is to supervise the efficient operation of the boiler plant and to ensure a continuous and reliable supply of steam to the Institution. Maintain accurate records of all utilities and permitting, to monitor the needed changes to remain in compliance with required DEP permits. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. 50% Supervises subordinate staff and inmate workers in the performance of routine and specialized boiler plant work such as the operation, maintenance, and repair of steam boilers, pumps, water/sewage equipment, and water towers. Establishes and implements functional work processes and procedures. Provides orientation and training for subordinate staff and inmate workers assigned to the boiler plant operation, which includes reviewing applicable regulations, job requirements, and safety tips, as well as, providing instruction in any specialized areas of operation, maintenance, and repair. 30% Oversees and inspects boiler plant processes and procedures to ensure compliance with established safety and sanitation standards. Develops and implements changes to reduce operational costs and improve service efficiency. Reviews and recommends approval or disapproval of requisitions for supplies and equipment based on operational needs. Supervises the installation, operation, and maintenance of all equipment to ensure satisfactory, safe, and efficient operation. 15% Plans, coordinates, and schedules sufficient staffing coverage. Submits reports on tool inventories, safety, production, and staff assignments. Maintains records in accordance with ACA and facility requirements. Searches inmates and work areas for contraband and ensures security of work area. 5% Performs other related duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Exercise therapeutic care, custody, and control over inmates 2. Supervise, evaluate, and direct the work of subordinate staff 3. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing 4. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp 5. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking 6. Operate basic office equipment 7. Maintain regular and reliable attendance 8. Work all shifts as required by operational necessities and emergencies 9. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with overtime provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification 10. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in the maintenance, operation, and repair of a boiler plant 11. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform 12. Establish and maintain effective working relationships 13. Visually observe inmates’ activities 14. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels 15. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet) 16. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing 17. Travel as required |
