Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position is responsible for overseeing intensive psychiatric treatment of mentally ill patients within the admission psychiatric unit. The incumbent is responsible for providing supervision to staff psychiatrists. This position reports directly to the Chief of Psychiatry or, in the absence, the Chief Medical Officer.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

1. Coordinates a multi-disciplinary approach in managing all psychiatric treatments and ensures that the units are functioning in an efficient professional manner.

2. Supervises the work performed by staff psychiatrists assigned to her. Provides consultative guidance to professional in developing/revising treatment programs which are developed for each patient.

3. Assists in the development of policies and procedures in meeting standards of CMS. Promulgates information to staff in maintaining continuity of care throughout the extended/intermediate care/admission units. Reviews charts and treatment plans to ensure proper documentation is maintained and quality patient care is provided.

4. Writes orders for treatment and necessary studies; makes daily rounds to observe the patients; performs necessary psychotherapy and counseling and formulates treatment plans with the assistance of the treatment team by utilizing the tools of his/her training and experience in order to assure individualized quality patient care.

5. Performs competency evaluations and participates in commitment procedures by following the recommended hospital guidelines in order to aid in quality care.

6. As team director supervise and correlate all multi-disciplinary data necessary in the care and treatment of patients by conferring with staff and treatment team members, relatives, agencies, attorneys, courts or others interested in the care, treatment and prognosis of patients in order to facilitate prudent discharge planning with the appropriate community follow-up. As team director supervise the completion and appropriateness of other discipline assessments, treatment planning conferences, discharge planning and post-discharge coordination of care by: (a) being knowledgeable of current professional/practice standards, facility regulations and policies, privileging requirements and clinical skills necessary for the treatment of patients, understanding the skill of team members and their additional discipline obligations in order to implement effective treatment interventions; (b) possessing the ability to assess credentialing, privileging and training requirements of team members to assure team members are adequate to the assigned tasks; (c) assuring dignified and humane treatment of patients assigned to the team; (d) assuring collaboration and coordination of service delivery among all service providers through effective communication, including communication with supervisors if required; (e) directing the team meeting and facilitating the planning process through defining the agenda, encouraging member input, priority establishment, care implementation and discharge planning; (f) ensuring participation as much as possible of patient, family and advocate involvement in the treatment and discharge process; (g) assuring the protection and the ongoing clinical appropriateness and monitoring of patients involved in clinical research programs; (h) identifying the need and facilitating outside collaborative care in circumstances where in-house resources are not present for specific consultations, treatments, or development of adaptive services; (i) maintaining a record of points discussed when team members are in disagreement about treatment and, after adequate deliberation, making the final clinical and/or administrative decision; and (j) referring matters of substantial disagreement to the Chief Medical Officer.

7. Serve as an active member of the Medical Staff by participating on assigned hospital committees in order to help provide for quality patient care.

8. Prepare and complete all required reports by submitting when due in order to document activities on the unit.

9. Perform other related duties, interim work-duty assignments or reassignments and special projects by assignment in order to participate in activities related to patient care. The purpose and standards will be provided at the time of assignment.

10. Maintain timely communications with other staff in order to keep abreast of clinical and non-clinical issues via e-mail and interoffice communications.

11. Utilize a recovery-focused approach with patients.

12. Be familiar with and utilize evidence-based best practices and follow nationally accepted clinical guidelines for quality patient care. Also ensure that subordinates do the same.

13. Ensure continuity of care to patient's post-discharge as needed.

14. Participate in case conference discussions of challenging cases and provide leadership of the group when assigned.

15. Participate in CSPs and ensure the integration of CSPs in the treatment plan.

16. Remain certified in Mandt training.

Psychiatric supervisor evaluates and makes psychiatric care and treatment decision on all patients under her care. She is responsible for evaluating the quality of care of the employees she supervises and makes decisions on their ratings. She is responsible for deciding when to make referrals to supervisor or specialist. The supervisor interprets and enforces hospital and personnel policy as well as TJC or accredidation requirements.
