Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. This is a professional forestry position responsible for meeting the objectives of the Forest Resource Plan within the Elk Forest District and, assisting owners of private forest land with the management of their forest land in Elk and Cameron Counties. This position will split time between the district CFM program and the district timber management program. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Is a State Forest Officer charged with enforcing all the State Forest Rules and Regulations. Assists with insect and disease detection and suppression efforts. Conducts and assists with field and office work needed for implementing the Resource Management Plan. 1.Examine landscapes in assigned work area to: A.Assess the condition of the forest resource B.Identify needed cultural activities. C.Evaluate habitat for flora and fauna and identify deficiencies, special needs or unique conditions. Landscape examination field data to be properly recorded in Landscape Exam Data Capturing Program before December 31 of the exam year. 2.Identify needed silvicultural treatments to assigned compartments on the Elk State Forest using established procedures and accepted practices in accord with the State Forest Resource Management Plan. 3.Apply identified silvicultural treatments through the established Timber Sale program on at least 250 acres annually. 4.Administer contracts for Timber Sales through weekly inspections of active sales. 5.Identify and implement needed strategies to ensure forest regeneration. 6.Protect the forest resource through assistance with forest fire prevention and suppression programs as directed by the District Forester. 7.Collect GPS data associated with timber sales, regeneration activities, habitat management activities, and identified forest recreation features. 8.Collect field data as needed for the updating and revision of the Forest Resource Management Plan. 9.Maintain high work standards and values by remaining current with literature and training germane to the field of professional forestry. 10.Prepare reports associated with the above tasks as directed and maintain appropriate records and documentation as defined by supervisor. Works with landowners, partners, and governmental agencies through established means to promote forest stewardship and the wise use of forest resources. Coordinate Rural and Community Forestry activities and work with landowners from the private sector in Elk and Cameron Counties. Represent the Elk Forest District at County Conservation District Meetings.
