Exposure to engineering areas of technology, the Construction, Maintenance and Highway Safety and Traffic through on-the-job learning activities will prepare the incumbent to advance into a permanent career position within the District. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Performs a variety of beginning level technical work assignments in all phases of PennDOT including design, construction, and maintenance. Employee will perform engineering support functions to each PennDOT Unit and develop a basic understanding of departmental policies, procedures, organizational responsibilities, and workflow. Training consists of scheduled rotational work assignments in Engineering Districts to gain familiarity with District personnel and procedures and to participate in work projects to achieve the overall training objective. Employees will also participate in classroom training as designated by the program coordinator. Works is closely screened prior to assignment and reviewed in detail for completeness, technical accuracy, and soundness of approach both in progress and upon completion. Upon satisfactory completion of the training program, final job placement will be in the Bridge Unit. Prepares a wide variety of bridge and structural plans, maps, and similar drawings. The work follows prescribed methods and procedures and involves the application of technical and drafting skills. Utilizes Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) to prepare technical bridge and structural drawings. Performs drafting and detailing work associated with the development and preparation of final bridge and structural plans from preliminary sketches, existing highway plans, existing bridge plans, and from field survey data. This includes structures such as reinforced concrete box culverts, simple span bridges, metal plate culverts, and bridge rehabilitation projects. Utilizes algebra, plane geometry, and trigonometry to perform mathematical calculations to compute plan quantities and perform structural drafting with professional and technical guidance. Participates in field inspection of bridges for bridge rehabilitation and replacement projects. Develops field inspection notes and sketches with direction from professional and technical staff. Performs other duties as assigned. SAFETY: 1. Assess your environment and be responsible for your safety, the safety of co-workers, and the public. 2. Attend required safety training and adhered to the requirements of all safety manuals, policies, and laws. 3. Immediately report to your supervisor any incident, unsafe practice, or near miss. 4. When in an enclosed environment (office buildings, confined spaces, flagger stations, equipment pinch points, etc.), know your evacuation process and escape route, your communication protocols, and appropriately react in the event of an incident.. Succession Planning: Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees. Green Plan Policy: Commit to following the Department's Green Plan Policy (Pub 712) and the associated principles. Failure to comply with the Department Green Plan policy shall be documented in employee's performance review. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): Unless directed otherwise by your supervisor or manager, comply with stated work hours for the 7.5-hour day. |
