Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Perform as the Facility Medical Director as the physician who oversees the medical care and other designated care and services in a health care organization or facility. The Medical Director is responsible for coordinating medical care and helping to develop, implement and evaluate resident care policies and procedures that reflect current standards of practice. Resident care policies are the facility’s overall goals, directives, and governing statements that direct the delivery of care and services to residents. Resident care procedures describe the processes by which the facility provides care to residents that is consistent with current standards of practice and facility policies. Perform in accordance with current medical standards of practice; as consistent with state & federal laws and regulations, with approaches to care, procedures, techniques, treatments, etc., that are based on research and/or expert consensus and that are contained in current manuals, textbooks, or publications, or that are accepted, adopted or promulgated by recognized professional organizations or national accrediting bodies. Function as the attending physician for the facility’s residents in the capacity of the physician who has the primary responsibility for the medical care of a resident. Diagnose and treat medical conditions. Write orders and treatment plans to achieve and maintain the highest level of physical and mental health of residents. Conduct medical rounds, bedside visits; at least monthly including medical examinations. Review the resident’s overall condition and program of care at each visit, including medications and treatments. Order medications that are appropriate for residents, taking into consideration staying within the formulary. Order radiological imaging studies, laboratory and other tests, as indicated. Review and monitor residents' adherence to prescribed treatments. Chart medical care practices and regimens in the electronic medical record (EMR). Prepare referrals to specialists and other medical facilities. Evaluate and collaborate with consulting physicians regarding recommendations. Upon concurrence, implement into the resident's current care plan. Prepare and modify residents' care plans by interpreting results of new admission and subsequent physical exams. Provide on call general medical practitioner coverage for residents during evening/weekend and holiday hours, or on an emergency basis according to the Commandant’s direction. Conduct admission physicals to determine recommended level of care and to obtain basic data to develop a care plan. Prepare medical status at time of discharge by summarizing the physical health and results of treatment plans in order to create a permanent record of residents’ health at the time of discharge. Enter discharge summary into the EMR. Write discharge orders. Completes and adheres to a written collaborative agreement with any/all certified registered nurse practitioners (CRNP) staff at the facility who are employed by DMVA as required by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. i.e., the Staff Physician 2 is the Supervisory Physician and the DMVA Chief Medical Officer is the substitute Supervisory Physician as indicated on the collaborative agreement. Supervises CRNP staff. Performs supervisory duties including planning, assigning, and evaluating work, determining work priorities, interviewing and selecting employees, evaluating employee performance, approving or disapproving leave requests, initiating disciplinary actions, determining subordinate training needs, coaching and counseling subordinate employees, and resolving problems and disagreements. Supervises CRNP staff for medically-related activities such as assigning/scheduling resident encounters; participating in clinical rounds at the facility not limited to, but including: wound rounds, behavioral health rounds, etc.; and validating/monitoring CRNP Prescriptive Authority Approval to prescribe medications as issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. Conduct routine pre-employment physicals for potential employees. Provide care or assistance to residents and employees in emergency situations that occur on the premises. Performs work in accordance with the DMVA general safety rules and safety rules for this position. Immediately reports all workplace injuries or incidents to the supervisor; and/or immediately corrects any safety hazards in the work area or reports same to the supervisor. Adhere to the Governor’s Code of Conduct and all federal, state and facility regulations, rules and policies. Attend facility, staff and patient care, meetings. Participate in continuing education programs. Complete required CME activities to maintain an active, unrestricted Pennsylvania medical license. Follow universal precautions. Use required personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, gowns, goggles, face shield, etc. Perform related work as required. |
