Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position provides field support for the implementation of Bureau of Wildlife Management (BWM) and Region programs. This position acts as part of a fully functional wildlife management team with shared BWM program support among the Wildlife Management Supervisor, wildlife biologist 1, wildlife technician, bio-aide, and intern positions to achieve the Agency’s goals and objectives.

Performs technical wildlife management work including, but not limited to: capturing, handling, marking, and monitoring birds and mammals, wildlife population monitoring, wildlife response to habitat management, and wildlife health monitoring. Ensures projects and surveys follow established guidelines and meet expected deadlines.

Description of Duties:

Captures, marks, and monitors birds and mammals for research and population assessment using established and novel scientific methods and equipment. Conducts field surveys for birds and mammals at the Region level. Coordinates and provides logistic support for field research among other Region staff including biologists, technicians, interns, land managers, wardens, and habitat crews.

Specific duties include:

1) Coordinates and conducts the capture, tagging, and banding of wildlife. Manages and maintains capture equipment. Assists with data collection, entry, and database management.

2) Carefully, humanely, and responsibly administers pharmaceuticals, including controlled substances, to study animals. Maintains precise and accurate records of pharmaceutical use. Stores, handles, manages, and discards substances in accordance with established rules, regulations, policies, and state and federal laws.

3) Assists in the collection of specimens for use in wildlife research and management. Collects blood and other biological samples from wildlife; prepares and submits samples to labs for diagnostics.

4) Monitors movements and survival of wildlife using VHF, satellite, GPS, and similar technologies, and specialized software. Responds to wildlife mortalities to collect samples and assess causes.

5) Assists in surveys of wildlife populations and habitat conditions.

6) Uses and maintains on and off-road vehicles.

7) Adheres to established protocols for collection of data, and accurately records, compiles, maintains, and transmits data collected using computer software (Excel, Word, Survey123, Field Maps, Avenza, GPSPlusX/Inventa, etc.).

8) Provides Region support for Agency-wide program activities including, but not limited to, deer aging, CWD surveillance and management, and bear check stations.

9) Perform outreach activities related to position responsibilities and duties, including preparing written materials, interacting with the public (including hunters, non-hunters, butchers, taxidermists), and assisting with or providing formal presentations.

10) Conducts other duties as assigned by the wildlife management supervisor.
This position requires that the employee be self-motivated, capable of working independently without frequent, direct supervision, able to follow instructions and adapt broad guidance to particular circumstances. This person must be able to work outside under a variety of adverse field conditions and have good interpersonal skills. Employee may act as lead directing wildlife biologist-aides, interns, and volunteers, but performs no supervisory duties.


Essential Functions:
1. Skilled in the use of wildlife management equipment and survey techniques, including wildlife capture, handling, marking, telemetry, habitat sampling, and remote sensing/camera trapping.
2. Effectively interacts with agency personnel, governmental officials, and the public regarding wildlife projects, surveys, and programs.
3. Collects, compiles, and validates wildlife and habitat data
4. Applies skills identifying wildlife, wildlife sign, and habitat assessment.
5. Applies knowledge of wildlife ecology, management, and research principles.
6. Uses knowledge and skilled use of computers, office software, GIS software, and GPS.
7. Responsibly maintains equipment, gear, and supplies.
8. Speaks and writes clearly and effectively.
9. Adheres to Agency policies, rules, and regulations as outlined in SOPs and Commonwealth guidelines.
10. Drives and maintains Commonwealth vehicles safely and responsibly.
11. Possesses sufficient physical stamina to perform all duties in adverse weather conditions and rough terrain.

The wildlife technician provides field support for wildlife research and management activities. Employee makes judgement calls independently in the field to ensure safe and efficient completion of work. Employee responds to inquiries directly by answering questions or providing information when appropriate. Employee completes assigned tasks that meet established timeframes set by the supervisor and schedules other related work or projects with the supervisor’s approval.
