Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Provides assistance to staff engineers, geologists or draftsman designers in the investigation, development, design and construction of abandoned mine land projects with particular emphasis on subsidence control projects, mine shafts and portal sealing projects, underground mine fire control projects, refuse pile fire abatement projects, surface mine restoration projects, waterline projects and projects involving acid mine drainage abatement or control. The opportunity may include overnight travel throughout Pennsylvania’s coal fields and presents exposure to a wide range of environmental problems.


Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Participates in an on-the-job training program designed to develop practical proficiency in the reclamation and remediation of abandoned mine land issues throughout Pennsylvania.

Assists in performing field reviews of abandoned mine related problems at abandoned mine sites. Utilizes the principles of mining engineering, geology, mine design, mine and plane surveying, hydraulics, soils engineering, civil engineering and other engineering methods to evaluate the problem.

Utilizes basic computer software, such as spreadsheets, databases and/or engineering software to assist in the planning and development of projects.

Assists staff in obtaining water samples and other mine related materials, i.e. coal refuse, and spoil.

Assists Abandoned Mine Reclamation, Cambria District Office staff, such as engineers, hydrogeologists, geologists, and surveyors, to obtain project development or data such as drill log information, overburden characteristics, geological formation identities, water sample analysis or survey control.

Promotes the Department's mission.

Inputs appropriate data in a prescribed format to meet data quality standards set forth by guidance, training, and policy across all of DEP’s electronic data systems; to include ensuring accuracy and completeness of entries, and where available, the use of system specific tools to ensure duplicative entries and data quality issues are minimized.
