Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This Intern position is intended to be a learning, hands-on experience and is responsible to assist the foresters and other staff of the Forbes Forest District with the management of state forest land, rural and community private lands, forest health, forest fire protection, state forest maintenance, state forest recreation, and environmental education.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

This Intern position is headquartered at the Forbes Forest District Office.

Assist with all types of duties normally assigned to a forester at a technical/scientific level including, but not limited to: state forest timber sales including marking timber, sale layout, and timber sale data collection; Geographic information systems (GIS) work using latest ArcMap software; global positioning systems (GPS) data collection; state forest management; regeneration projects including deer fence maintenance; recreation projects including trail maintenance; mapping; surveying; invasive species management; environmental education programs; public information; rural and community forestry on private lands including private landowner visits, tree insect and disease advice, urban forest inventories, tree planting advice, stream buffers, forest management plans, and cost-share programs; wildfire management including wildfire prevention programs; tree planting; wildlife habitat projects; forest insect and disease surveys and management; state forest maintenance; office work; and using computer applications.

Use basic forestry hand tools, including GPS unit, and basic maintenance tools to complete assigned tasks.

Intern works under direct supervision of the resource forest assistant manager and is assigned daily work with reviews through daily contact and periodic field inspections.

Essential Functions
: Provide a list of essential functions for this position. Example: Transports boxes weighing up to 60 pounds.
 
 1. Report for work dressed appropriately for the task and maintain good physical hygiene.
 2. Understand and implement written and oral instructions.
 3. Operate motorized equipment and effectively use basic hand tools to complete assigned tasks.
 4. Able to identify common PA trees and have a basic understanding of forest measurements.
 5. Read and interpret maps and posses basic field orientation skills.
 6. Frequently traverse steep, rough, and uneven terrain over long distances under varying climatic conditions sometimes carrying up to 40lbs of material.
 7. Complete written records and reports so that they can be readily understood.
 8. Communicate clearly with associates in both oral and written format and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
 9. Operate GPS devices and use GIS technology and Microsoft software effectively.
 10. Learn, apply, and communicate Commonwealth and Bureau of Forestry rules, policies, and procedures and observe safety and health requirements.
