Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. The Utility Plant Operator II is responsible and accountable for the operation of gas fired, oil fired boilers, and auxiliary equipment to provide steam needed for heat, hot water and/or processes. This employee serves as a main operator for the shift and as the Lead Worker, with full responsibility of the Boiler Plant during the absence of the Utility Plant Supervisor (UPS)or the Supervisor's designee. The UPOII carries out the following job tasks in the Boiler Room on the grounds of Danville State Hospital, under the direct control and close supervision of the (UPS)or his/her designee. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Is fully responsible for the Boiler Plant on shift (in the absence of the UPS) by serving as the Lead Worker for UPO I's and/or other staff by following pre-established standard operating procedures in order to provide leadership on shift for the Boiler Plant. Fires Facilities gas/oil fired boilers by observing the condition of the fire, reading gauges, recording fuel consumption, adjusting firing controls, blowing down boilers and by maintaining required records of steam production and fuel consumption, in order to maintain steam required for continuing heat, hot water and/or processes. Reviews operation of all Boiler Plant equipment by visually inspecting, listening, and/or testing in order to detect impending difficulties. Collects water samples, tests water samples and adds/adjusts chemicals by following pre-established standard operating procedures in order to insure for the proper chemical levels. Performs Preventive Maintenance by following the instructions/tasks listed on the Preventive Maintenance Work Orders in order to insure equipment longevity and peak operating performance. Makes adjustments and repairs to boilers, pumps, generators, auxiliary equipment; packs pumps, valves, and fittings by following pre-established standard operating procedures in order to ensure equipment continues to function efficiently and safely. Operates various Plant equipment such as chain hoists, forklifts, emergency generators, and sewage pumps by following pre-established standard operating procedures in order to ensure that this equipment is utilized efficiently and safely. Performs cleaning by following standard operating procedures in order to ensure the Plant is maintained in a neat, orderly and safe condition. Performs In-Plant maintenance as required by performing cleaning, painting renovations, plumbing, electrical and/or carpentry duties as may be assigned, in order to ensure the Physical Plant is maintained properly. This position requires the physical ability to enter a 12" X 18" Manhole. This work can include various parts of the steam and condensate distribution system including - the tunnel and/or underground piping, valves and related equipment. Ensures proper oil usage/supply by recording oil usage, monitoring oil tank levels and by monitoring the leak detection system in order to insure proper oil supplies. This position is considered “Emergency Essential” as defined in DHS Manual 7136.3 and must comply with all aspects of local Policy/Procedure 102.078. Performs other related duties by following instructions of the UPS in order to provide for continuity of services. These other duties may include, but are not necessarily limited to other trades work, laboring, housekeeping, grounds, and some light equipment operation within your capabilities. |
