Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Under the direction of an Automotive Mechanic Supervisor or Equipment Manager, the incumbent performs a variety of independent skilled trades duties in the repair of parts, structural welding of bridge members, repairs to frames on equipment, hitches, plows, fabricates repair parts and body parts for a variety of applications using oxy-acetylene, electric arc, heli-arc, or other similar types of equipment to join metals.


Description of Duties:

Participates in maintaining a safe work environment for self and others by using proper safety procedures and equipment; maintains awareness of work area helping self and others to avoid unnecessary risks and hazards; keeps work area clean, organized and materials properly stored; reports all accidents and injuries as soon as they occur and gets proper treatment to minimize risk of further injury.

Recognizing that everyone is involved in the District’s and County’s actions to demonstrate sound environmental practices, each employee fulfills the maintenance unit business plan objectives related to the Strategic Environmental Management Program (SEMP). Also, supports the efforts of other employees to meet these objectives.

Attends environmental training identified for this Working Title in the District’s SEMP Manual for Sound Environmental Practices.

Follows proper attendance and call off procedures. Schedules non-emergency absences in advance; observes start/stop times, breaks, and meal times; works efficiently and effectively alone and with others; is available for overtime emergency responses; and minimizes nonproductive and down time for self and crew.

This position may require operation of a vehicle in excess of 26,000 pounds GVW to perform field repairs. Incumbents must then have a valid Pennsylvania Class "C" Lic.

This position is heavily involved in outdoor activity and has periods of heavy exertion. Incumbents must have the following abilities:

To work under a variety of adverse weather conditions such as extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, dust, or snow.

To be able to work extended hours under adverse conditions in response to emergency conditions.

To work in hazardous situations such as around moving heavy equipment, in and around traffic, at heights, on steep grades, and on ladders and uneven surfaces. Employee must be able to observe and react to hazard warnings, back-up alarms, flashing lights, voice commands, and hand signals.

To perform manual laboring duties such as lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, setting up and operating testing and measuring equipment, using hand tools such as hammers and pry bars, and taking and transporting materials samples. Work often requires stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, and prolonged standing.

Able to withstand exposure to chemical agents within manufacturer's safety data sheet (MSDS) limits while using recommended protective devices; exhaust gasses, fumes and lubricants in concentrations normally found in and around highway projects and equipment repair facilities; poisonous plants, animals and insects; and potential minor injuries such as bruises, scrapes, cuts, sprains, and strains.
To wear all types of required protective gear such as hard hats, footgear, hearing and eye protection, gloves, and respirators.
Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees.

Safety:

2. Attend required safety training and adhere to the requirements of all safety manuals, policies, and laws.
3. Immediately report to your supervisor any incident, unsafe practice, or near miss.
4. When in an enclosed environment (office buildings, confined spaces, flagger stations, equipment pinch points, etc.), know your evacuation process and escape route, your communication protocols, and appropriately react in the event of an incident.
