Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The employee occupying this position is responsible and accountable for basic housekeeping and performs a variety of hand and machine sewing tasks needs of this hospital in specifically assigned areas. This is in support of hospital goals of maintaining a clean, comfortable, sanitary environment for patients, staff and/or visitors. The employee carries out the following tasks on and/or off the grounds of Danville State Hospital under the direct control and close supervision of the Custodial Work Supervisor.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Provides basic housekeeping duties by cleaning and wiping surfaces such as but not necessarily limited to, wash bowls, commodes, urinals, counters, water coolers, lockers, and furnishings in general, remove trash and/or refuse, cleaning floors, cleaning walls, cleaning ceilings, clean air conditioners, and replace light bulbs in order to maintain a healthy, clean, safe, and therapeutically pleasing environment for patient, staff and/or visitors.

Services outside areas by sweeping and washing down steps and ramps, cleaning of entrance ways and by snow/ice removal, in order to maintain clean safe conditions for all pedestrian traffic.

Maintains equipment by cleaning all external surfaces of equipment, inspecting electrical cords and connections, visible portions of equipment for defects in order to assure proper, efficient, and safe operations.

Utilizes various housekeeping equipment including but not necessarily limited to sweepers, vacuums, scrubbers and/or power washers.

Gathers and disposes of waste products, recyclable materials, infectious waste, and hazardous materials according to safe material handling guidelines.
Maintains Housekeeping closets by ensuring all equipment is properly stored, all containers are properly labeled, and all infection control supplies are maintained in order to ensure that these areas meet or exceed all laws, codes and/or standards.

Performs sewing work requiring the use of hand instruments, power sewing machines, and other equipment.
Repairs clothing, and repairs mattresses, pillows and blankets.
Repair and mark linens, washcloths, towels.
Tags and marks clothing and linen, sorts laundry, cleans sewing room and oils machines.
Pick up, deliver and mark items needed to be marked throughout the institution.
Fabricates, alters and repairs draperies, cubicle curtains and window blinds.

Maintains and improves necessary job skills by participating in and attending in-service training programs, Staff Development Classes, and any out-service training provided in order to improve performance and quality of custodial services.

This position is considered "Emergency Essential" as defined in DHS Manual 7136.3 and must comply with all aspects of local Policy/Procedure 102.078.

Performs other related duties by carrying out the instructions of the supervisor in order to provide for continuity of service.
