Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Responsible for all aspects of psychiatric care and treatment of assigned patients. Is the leader of the multidisciplinary treatment team. On occasions will provide coverage for other staff psychiatrists during their emergency or scheduled leave.

Description of Duties:

Service to include responsibility in consumer care and treatment which may include but is not limited to:


1. Performs formal psychiatric assessment on admissions when applicable, as well as yearly comprehensive psychiatric assessments, and reviews all psychiatric diagnoses.
2. Performs, on a monthly basis, psychiatric reviews of patients and documents in monthly progress note, in accordance with Norristown State Hospital standards.
3. Using E.H.R Reviews medication on monthly basis and as necessary making adjustments and/or changes to ensure proper psychopharmacological treatment is applied to each individual patient. This involves the correct medication(s) in the minimal effective dosage with minimal required use of polypharmacy.
4. When required, does competency evaluations.
5. Leads the treatment team and oversees the planning and implementation of individual treatment plan for each patient. Ensures appropriate documentation. Provides leadership with interdisciplinary staff in assuring that active treatment programs are being conducted daily. Reviews and evaluates discharge planning and documents patient's progress toward community placement.
6. Makes rounds, attends to emergencies, makes sure environmental factors are conducive to the patients' recovery.
7. Completes all documentation using the format and content approved by the Medical Staff within the NSH and departmental policies and standards. Responsible for psychiatric transfer notes in compliance with hospital standards, when applicable. Dictates discharge summaries in a timely manner in accordance with hospital requirements.
8. Reviews and presents difficult cases to supervising psychiatrist and/or to psychiatric staff for consultation. This may include presentation at Physicians Forum.
9. Participates in Building Performance Improvement Programs and hospital-wide PI programs.
10. Attends building and hospital-wide meetings.
11. Serves on Medical Staff committees when appointed.
12. Participates in educational activities, both in service and formal CME's.
13. Maintains contact with families and remains accessible to patient advocates, community caseworkers, etc.
14. When applicable, prepares reports to courts and provides testimony at commitment hearings.
15. Responds to all requests made by the hospital and/or outside agencies, provides appropriate and timely correspondence.
16. When in needs, consults with supervising psychiatrist relating to all the above matters.
Essential Functions:
Seeing the condition of the patient, being able to interpret facial expressions and body language.
Hearing spoken voice in person and on phone
Being able to walk, when necessary, rapidly in the case of emergencies from one end of the building to another.
Driving a car to transport self from one building to another for emergencies.
Writing legibly or being able to type if writing is not legible.
Being able to be bodily flexible (bending, etc.) when necessary to examine patients.
Reading fluency in English.

Serves as Treatment Team Director and is responsible for the psychiatric care of all patients in assigned unit; consults with supervisor for complex psychiatric issues.
