Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The Aide Trainee (AT) classification is trainee level work. The Aide Trainee takes instruction from the Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Nurse Supervisor (RNS) and the Registered Nurse Instructor (RNI) on the unit. The Aide Trainee will complete classroom and on the job training through practice, observation, and competencies to provide direct patient care duties in support of patients’ daily living activities and programs. Work assignments are received in the form of oral or written instructions.

Description of Duties:

The Aide Trainee (AT) is responsible for learning psychiatric and nursing direct patient care under the observation and direction of the unit RN, RNS and the RNI.
Upon completion of training, certifications and competency assessment, the AT will be able to complete these lists of duties. These lists are not to be considered as all inclusive.

Patient Care
•Uses age-specific, patient-centered approaches in patient interactions.
•Reports patient’s response to interventions.
•Performs/assists/supervises/instructs patients in all activities of daily living (ADLs) e.g. dressing,
bathing, shampooing/combing hair, trimming nails, oral hygiene, eating, etc.
•Reports changes in patients’ conditions to the Registered Nurse
•Positions/lifts/transfers patients; Uses mechanical lifts as per manufacturer’s instructions.
•Assists pts. in a wheelchair to be secured in the wheelchair van.
•Escorts patients on and off grounds for activities and medical appointments.
•Monitors and supervises patients during program and leisure activities.
•Takes and records temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressures, weighs patients.
•Uses standard precaution techniques, such as handwashing, per policy.
•Assists with patient identification as needed.

•Provides and documents meals, fluids, toileting.
•Assists patients with maintenance of living space.
•Performs light housekeeping duties in the patient care areas.
•Lifts and carries up to 50 pounds.

Infection Control
• Practicing proper personal hygiene.
• Uses standard precaution techniques, such as, but not limited to, handwashing, per policy.
• Thorough hand washing and wearing gloves with direct patient care.
• Orders and replenishes supplies.
• Transports, folds and stores clean linen.
• Assures that patients have and utilize adequate personal supplies.
• Cleans treatment supply cabinets and refrigerators.
• Disinfects unit emergency equipment.
• Monitors refrigerator/freezer temperature.
• Follows personal protective equipment direction when issued.
• Maintains a clean environment in both patient rooms and common areas of the assigned unit,
this includes but is not limited to cleaning of or assistance with incontinence episodes, spilled
liquids/food, etc. Specifically, providing immediate clean-up to the area after an episode of
patient incontinence.

Special Treatment Procedures
•Provides nursing care for those patients that may require special levels of observation including
therapeutic use of physical restraint while adhering to hospital policy and prescribers’ orders under the
direction/supervision of the Registered Nurse.
•Responds to psychiatric emergencies, provides the patient(s) with individual instruction, assistance,
support as needed.
•Observes and reports changes in patient behaviors.
•Utilizes therapeutic verbal techniques to address patient concerns and de-escalation.

Emergencies/Medical interventions/Use of Medical Equipment
•Responds to medical emergencies, announces a medical emergency, takes appropriate actions for
which specifically trained. These could include cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid.
•Responds to disaster/emergencies, e.g., fires, weather related, flood, hazardous materials incidents.
•Follows basic emergency procedures per policy/procedure.
•Uses proper equipment properly and safely as per manufacturers recommendations, reports
malfunctioning and/or inaudible alarm systems/equipment to the RN.

Competency Maintenance Activities
•Attends and takes part in ongoing Clarks Summit State Hospital (CSSH) mandatory, hospital and
departmental training programs e.g., Crisis Prevention training, CPR, Fire/Safety, Infection Control,
Patient Rights, Patient Abuse, Drug-Free Workplace, Right to Know, etc.
•Attends in-services/training programs/and completes self-learning packages as required
•Identifies personal training needs.
•Reads new policies and procedures and are responsible for content.
•In person meetings with supervision.

Oral and Written Communications
•Interacts with others in a polite and respectful manner.
•Writes/prints legibly.
•Basic computer skill.
•Documents in the patient record and on departmental forms. Uses only approved abbreviations.
•Provides accurate and legible written work/incident related statements.
•Completes patient accountability checks
•Maintains confidentiality of patient and facility information
•Reports problems accurately using the chain of command
•Reports/documents patient incidents and employee work related accidents to the Registered
Nurse/Supervisor
•Keeps conversations free from discriminatory, abusive, or sexually harassing comments
•Attends and participates in staff, committee, and Treatment Team meetings as assigned
•Completes records/reports as assigned.
•Is accepting and receptive to direction from Registered Nurse, supervisor and/or managers.
•Maintains positive and constructive relationships with others.
•Needs and sensitivities of others are recognized.

Assignment Completion
•Reviews and initials daily assignment sheet for work expectations for the shift.
•Seeks clarification from the Registered Nurse
•Organizes work to be done; sets priorities
•Orders and maintains nursing supplies, equipment, and forms
•Remains alert always.
•Reports difficulties to the Registered Nurse
•Participates in the nursing team effort by assisting coworkers.
•Must be able to work all units as assigned including reassignment during a shift to meet the needs of a unit, exception to this is with administrative approval only.
•Accepts work/unit assignments as determined by nursing administration.

Patients’ Rights
•Acts as a patient advocate.
•Recognizes and protects the rights of patients.
•Identifies and reports patient abuse allegations as per established policy and procedure.
•Commits no acts of patient abuse.
•Maintains confidentiality of patient and hospital information.
•Promotes a safe, therapeutic environment for patients.

Employee Conduct
•Demonstrates ethical, professional, respectful conduct with coworkers/patients/visitors and staff.
•Abides by the Governor’s Code of Conduct and DHS Personnel Regulations, policies and procedures,
and CSSH and Nursing Department policies and procedures.
•Employees are expected to be at their assigned clinical area, ready to work at the onset of their shift.
•Reports to the unit RN upon arrival for start of shift, signs in on the attendance record upon arrival
and on departure from the unit at the end of the shift.
•Leaves the unit only for assigned breaks, meals and as directed. Must notify the unit RN upon
departure and return to the unit.
•Adheres to scheduled work hours
•Adheres to established procedures for reporting off work in accordance with policy and procedure.
•Has no unexcused instance of failure to contact the Registered Nurse Supervisor to notify of any
absence.
•Establishes a record of prudent/sensible paid leave use which does not show evidence of any
discernible pattern or documented instance of failure to comply with DHS #7173, Controlling
Absenteeism, Time and Sick Leave Abuse
• Complies with leave/time request/Employee Self Service procedures.
• Participates in administrative and departmental investigations as required.
• Does not furnish contraband items to any patient and refrains from any monetary exchange with
the patients.
• Cell phones are not to be used in patient areas.
• Adherence to the work apparel dress code policy.
• Commits no acts of insubordination.

The Aide Trainee will not make any decisions regarding patient care.
Patient care decisions are only made by the Professional Treatment Team Members.

Experience:

1. Successful completion of CPR
