Position Purpose:

This position is located at the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation, Cambria District Office and reports to the Supervisor of the Acid Mine Drainage Development and Planning Section. Responsible charge oversight of technical work is provided and reviewed by Rock Martin, Environmental Group Manager.

Generally, this position provides assistance to staff biologists, geologists, and engineers on field investigations in determining the environmental impacts of mine drainage from abandoned mine sites.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

All work performed by you will be reviewed by your immediate Manager, Rock Martin, Environmental Group Manager.

Assists biologists, geologists and engineers in the preparation of reports based on field investigations consisting of map locations, site conditions and impacts, extent of problems, mining information, and other applicable data collected through field measurements.

Assists staff in the collection of macroinvertebrates and fish for biological assessments.
Performs measurements in the field. Collects water samples and tests water for pH, temperature and conductivity. Assists technical staff in collecting other mine related materials, i.e. coal, refuse, and spoil.

Assists technical staff with biologic and hydrologic stream assessments and in performing wetlands delineations.

Provides assistance to technical staff in the development of reclamation schemes for abandoned mine lands with particular emphasis on projects involving acid mine drainage and surface reclamation.

Assists in performing field investigations into abandoned mine related problems at abandoned mine sites. Utilizes the principles of mining engineering, geology, mine design, mine and plane surveying, hydraulics, soils engineering, and other engineering methods to evaluate the problem.

Utilizes basic computer software, such as spreadsheets, databases, and/or engineering software to assist in the planning and development of projects. Assists staff in data entry for water samples and compiling spreadsheets for data entry. Assists in entering project development information into the Department's eFACTS database system.

Assists staff in completing project development packages for submission to Department Design Sections. Packages include preliminary design and cost estimates, site sketch including property maps and deed information, property owner contact forms, Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program inventory searches, the scope of proposed reclamation, a general Environmental Assessment (EA) or a Categorical Exclusion Form (CEF) to ensure compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), a federal forms required for eligibility of the site for funding, and other forms required for the federal grant application, such as project completion forms.
