Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position assists in the provision of pharmaceutical services in a veterans’ long term care facility.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Receive, prepare, fill, and document prescriptions, including controlled substances, under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist. Assist in the performance of QS-1 software tasks such as running reports and printing Medical Administration Records (MARs) and Treatment Administration Records (TARs) as needed.

Maintain and control the pharmacy inventory according to reorder levels. Prepare purchase requests for pharmaceuticals; receive and stock orders. Maintain files or records of requisitions and purchases. Assist with periodic required inventories.

Discover and process outdated (expired) pharmaceuticals for return to the manufacturer for credit or replacement.

Maintain and replenish emergency drug boxes.

Become familiar with resident medication histories; compound prescriptions (such as ointments) as directed. Use reference material to gain knowledge of drug names/strengths and product identification.

Provide input to the Quality Improvement Program or other facility programs.

Maintain work area in a clean and orderly condition while performing related housekeeping duties.

Perform clerical support tasks such as typing, making copies, filing, answering phones, recording and distributing messages, etc. Complete carts per policy and process invoices within SAP when needed; call insurance companies and initiate prior authorization paperwork.

Perform work in accordance with the DMVA general safety rules and safety rules for this position. Immediately report all workplace injuries or incidents to the supervisor; and/or immediately correct any safety hazards in the work area or report same to supervisor.

Perform other related duties as required.

Use personal protective equipment when required such as gloves, masks, face shield, etc.

Work assignments are made in accordance with the fill schedule and adjusted as necessary.

Generate prescription labels, fill prescriptions, and screen for interactions within the scope of training under the direction of the Pharmacist.
