Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This is skilled work in the supervision and the care, custody and control of licensed barbers in a state correctional institution or facility.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

1. Manages inmate barbers in the practices, methods and techniques of barbering, including providing barber services to the general inmate population.

2. Provides management training related to inventory, supply ordering, and scheduling, through classroom theory, demonstration, and on-the-job training.

3. Prepares required performance/progress, attendance and wage reports on inmate barbers.

4. Prepares and processes applications and fees for the State Barber Board Manager examiniation for eligible inmate barbers.

5. Perform minor repairs on barber equipment and maintains tools and equipment used in other locations of the correctional facility such as the Restricted Housing Unit and Special Needs Unit.

6. Requisitions materials and supplies and completes required inventory reports of barber supplies.

7. Maintains order and discipline among inmate workers, conducts searches of inmates and work areas for contraband, and ensures security of the work area.

8. Performs other related duties as required






Essential job functions.

1. Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates
2. Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary
3. Manage inmates in the standard principles and practices of barber management
4. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp
5. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
6. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking
7. Work all shifts and posts as required by operational necessities and emergencies
8. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification
9. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
10. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in barber management
11. Maintain an active Barber Manager license issued by the PA State Board of Barber Examiners
12. Operate basic office equipment
13. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform
14. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
15. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
16. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
17. Visually observe inmates’ activities
18. Administer emergency medical assistance to inmates and staff
19. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
20. Travel as required
