Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Performs a variety of welding, brazing, and metal cutting duties on ferrous and non-ferrous materials and equipment in a County Maintenance Office.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Performs a variety of welding, brazing, soldering, coating, and metal cutting activities on ferrous and non-ferrous materials for maintenance, repair, or construction of highways and bridges.

Preheats and cleans metals, lays out, cuts and fits materials for welding.

Estimates time and materials to repair or modify equipment parts for equipment, highways, and brides.

Makes repairs to Department truck and automobile bodies; engine or trailer parts; machinery and equipment used in highway and bridge maintenance and repair.

Makes repairs to winter maintenance machinery and equipment such as plow frames, plow blades and spreaders.

Fabricates replacement parts or new parts for modification of equipment and repairs to body parts using oxy-acetylene, electric arc, heli-arc or other similar types of equipment to join and separate metals.

Welds and cuts specialized materials such as stainless steel and aluminum.

On a limited basis, performs minor repairs of welding equipment; mechanical work such as mounting and removing of plow frames and spreaders; and operates motorized equipment such as a forklift or pick-up truck.

Recognizes that everyone is involved in the District and County actions to demonstrate sound environmental practices, each employee fulfills the maintenance until business plan objectives related to the strategic environmental management program (SEMP). Also, supports the efforts of other employees to meet these objectives.

Attends environmental training designated for this position in the District’s SEMP Manual for Sound Environmental Practices.

Performs other related duties as required.


SEMP (all employees): Recognizing that everyone is involved in the District’s and County’s actions to demonstrate sound environmental practices, each employee fulfills the maintenance unit business plan objectives related to the Strategic Environmental Management Plan (SEMP).

Safety (Employees):
1. Assess your environment and be responsible for your safety, the safety of co-workers, and the public.
2. Attend required safety training and adhere to the requirements of all safety manuals, policies, and laws.
3. Immediately report to your supervisor any incident, unsafe practice, or near miss.
4. When in an enclosed environment (office buildings, confined spaces, flagger stations, equipment pinch points, etc.), know your evacuation process and escape route, your communication protocols, and appropriately react in the event of an incident.

Succession Planning (Employees):
Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees.

Decision Making:
Describe the types of decisions made by the incumbent of this position and the types of decisions referred to others. Identify the problems or issues that can be resolved at the level of this position, versus those that must be referred to the supervisor. Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature.

Independently interpret and apply welding skills and principles to the fabrication and modification of assigned welding projects from sketches and blueprints.

Estimate time and materials required for assignments.

Requirements Profile: Identify any specific experience or requirements, such as a licensure, registration, or certification, which may be necessary to perform the functions of the position. Experience:

1. Must possess certification to weld on bridge structures or obtain the certification within the six-month probationary period.
2. Possession of a valid Class C Driver’s License.

Essential Functions
