Position Purpose:

The purpose of this position is to ensure the smooth operation of electrical systems, especially during emergencies. This involves analyzing and adjusting equipment using specialized instruments, performing emergency repairs, and maintaining control equipment. The position also includes repairing power generating equipment, meters, and conducting tests based on blueprints. This is a 5-day, 16-hour a day operation subject to shift work.

ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEE – REQUIRED TO REPORT TO WORK DURING EMERGENCIES AND OFFICE CLOSINGS

Analyzes operation of generators, transformers, rotary converters, power control devices, and related equipment by means of various instruments such as ammeters, voltmeters, meggers, industrial analyzers, and graphic recorders. Record readings, observations, and compares with standards. Makes appropriate adjustments and reports abnormal conditions. From results or such system analysis, or in the anticipation of load changes, connects, disconnects, parallels, or effects substitutions for electrical units and conductors. Makes changes in such a manner and sequence to avoid danger, damage, and interruption of service.

Makes emergency cutouts and substitutions in the event of breakdowns or necessity for extensive repairs. Frequently works on “hot” electrical systems and adheres strictly to the safety rules, precautions, and procedures, including the appropriate equipment. Cleans, adjusts, and repairs electrical control equipment such as air and oil circuit breakers, starters, and remote-controlled switching gear. Troubleshoots and makes repairs from readings of blueprints and schematic diagrams.

Repairs power generating equipment. Repairs and calibrates watt-hour meters, ammeters, synchroscopes, and similar devices, comparing them with various control instruments and published standards. Test oil used in oil circuit breakers and transformers also assists contractors and vendors with periodic oil testing.

Dismantles, repairs, and reassembles generators, synchronous motors, motor generators, and rotary converters, using various electrical and mechanical tools and testing instruments. Adjusts relays and control equipment to obtain specified voltage, current, time delay, and other characteristics for appropriate holding, tripping, or other operational functions. Makes 13,000 volts splices, terminations and stress cones kits.

Stands watch at power distribution switchboard of generating plant. Controls electrical generation and the distribution of electrical power to various substations and consuming points. Operates switchboard controls to start, stop, cut in and out, synchronize and parallel generators and other equipment in accordance with operating conditions and requirements as interpreted from switchboard panel instrument readings.

Logs readings of power production and consumption and of various operating conditions.

Test cables, transformers, motors, breakers, and other electrical equipment.

Install and connect transformers on hangers and platforms, install proper insulators and materials, install underground cable and conduit, string lights and power wire on cross arms, and make electrical connections.

Operates lift truck to make electrical repairs on transformers and lines.

Drives to various locations throughout the Capitol Complex.

Competent computer skills in the following, email, smart phones, general use.

Variable frequency drive, installation, trouble shooting, repairs, diagnostic.

Performs other related duties as required.
