Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. This advanced and highly technical position is located within the Enterprise Data Center (EDC) of the Office of Administration / Office for Information Technology and provides leadership and supervision for the Enterprise VMware server infrastructure operations team. The role is responsible for the day-to-day management of virtual server infrastructure across the EDC and multiple offsite locations, supporting a wide range of services for Commonwealth agencies. Responsibilities include the design, deployment, configuration, monitoring, maintenance, repair, and decommissioning of virtual server hardware, virtual hosts, automation services, and related infrastructure. As part of the ETSO Compute and Cloud Services Division, this position also oversees system administration for all virtual infrastructure servers within the EDC’s Managed Services and Managed Services Lite offerings. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Responsible for ESXi host deployments, configuration, management, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and decommissioning. Performs ESXi host operating system deployments which are installed using an in house developed and managed method. Responsible for Multiple VMware Virtual Center’s configuration, management, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair across multiple datacenters. Responsible for the following applications design, configuration, management, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair. vRealize Operations Manager vRealize Automation(vRA) VMware logInsight VMware vCenter Orchestrator VMware NSX-T Manages integration between vRealize Automation to other Enterprise Solutions. Meets weekly with team members to review work plans, projects, tickets and open change requests to ensure deliverables’ dates are being met. Works with staff to develop mitigation plans when tasks are past due. This position is responsible to manage all aspects of assigned projects which include work break down schedules, deliverables and time management. Assigned projects are tracked via a work plan. Works with project managers to develop charters, scope documents and work break down structures for enterprise projects. Leads the design and configuration of Wintel, x86, and virtualization architectures. Provides 24x7 support for the virtual server infrastructure and develops and maintains team on-call schedules. Serves as the second-level escalation point for critical production incidents. Ensures adherence to EDC standards when deploying servers and other equipment across all environments, including compliance with change management, cable management, and inventory management practices. Implements and maintains departmental policies and procedures governing the virtual server infrastructure, ensuring alignment with Commonwealth standards. Responsible for maintaining Lenovo XClarity and Dell OpenManage deployment to monitor server hardware. Performs capacity planning for the server and virtual environments on a regular basis to ensure the planned and anticipated growth of the EDC can be accommodated. Responsible for performing system and infrastructure maintenance in accordance with Commonwealth ITB-SYM010. Service impacting maintenance is required to be performed during non-business Commonwealth designated maintenance windows. Maintains currency with technology in order to make recommendations to departmental management on the technological direction of the agency's virtual server infrastructure. Evaluates server configurations and performance statistics to ensure maximum operating efficiency. Provides direction to Exchange Network Management Team, Application Management Team and agency staff in implementing changes to the virtual server infrastructure configurations. Develops plans for and manages upgrade of software to ensure version consistency among agencies within the EDC and to ensure all customers have access to the latest tools that will allow them to work in the most productive and efficient manner possible. Develops and implements operating procedures for staff within the server operations to guide end user requests for support and service. Provides technical guidance to Commonwealth agencies during the deployment of host and virtual servers within the EDC co-location services offering. This includes software and hardware recommendations for servers Provides direction to the agencies in identifying operational problems related to hardware components, client and server software, network servers, network operating system, related virtual switches and messaging system servers and related software. Provides timely guidance to remedy these issues in an expeditious manner to minimize worker downtime and lost productivity. Meets with managers and IT Staff from all agencies to ascertain virtual server infrastructure requirements and to provide consulting assistance to determine the appropriate computing devices and related equipment for use within those offices. Operates in accordance with established service management best practices and procedures. Supports the generation of knowledge documents for integration into the established knowledge management system. Responsible for the Deployment, design, integration and configuration of automated services within the EDC utilizing vRealize Automation. Responsible for the Deployment, design, integration and configuration for automated server builds for the EDC. Performs other related duties as assigned, to include those outlined in the CoG Plan when the Plan is activated. Responds to the designated disaster recovery location when directed in response to a catastrophic incident. |
