This paid internship is open to all Pennsylvania students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate level academic program. This intern will support the Division of Environmental Health Epidemiology’s (DEHE) Pennsylvania Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) program with data analysis, research, and outreach activities. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. This internship will focus on data management and analysis, providing valuable hands-on experience in key data processes. The intern will assist EPHT staff in gathering data from various sources and ensuring its quality by removing duplicates, correcting errors, and maintaining consistency. The role will also involve conducting descriptive and exploratory data analysis using statistical software (SAS, R, etc.) to identify trends, patterns, and outliers in the data in large datasets (e.g., census data, administrative datasets). In addition, the intern will support the creation of visually engaging dashboards, graphs, and reports using data visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI, helping to present data in a clear and impactful way to stakeholders. Collaboration with department colleagues and external partners on data-driven projects will be an essential part of the role, contributing to environmental public health information generation and supporting decision-making. The intern may also have the opportunity to assist in writing academic manuscripts, conducting literature reviews, and supporting other ongoing dissemination efforts. Public Health Emergency Response – This position may be given an assignment to support the public health emergency response mission of the Department of Health. Emergency assignments could at times be received with little or no advance notice and may continue for any period ranging from a few hours to several weeks, depending on the nature of the circumstance. The emergency assignments may at times be performed under adverse conditions and may require travel to another site other than the employee’s assigned headquarters. The internship is planned to last 3 months with possibility of extension. |

The individual will serve as the primary recipient of any inquires coming into the BOE related to environmental health and will determine the appropriate course of action for a timely response. 3. Supervisors’ input to decision-making: Independent. Supervisor periodically reviews on-going work progress and results of some assignments. New assignments are performed independently based on knowledge of standards and procedures. 4. Communication authority: Position provides technical or administrative services and coordinates activities with others outside its work unit. |
