Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. This is a structured trainee level position that assists in providing for the care, custody, supervision and development of court adjudicated youth in a state operated facility. This trainee position participates in a six month formal classroom instruction and on-the-job training program designed to develop the knowledge, skills, abilities, and worker traits of a Youth Development Aide. Work involves attending and successfully completing the Juvenile Justice Academy that includes coursework in professionalism and ethics, adolescent development and behavior, principles of safety, security and supervision, group facilitation skills, effective communication skills, applicable Pennsylvania codes, CPR/AED and basic first-aid, use of mechanical devices, suicide management and awareness, Safe Crisis Management, medication awareness, cultural awareness, fire safety and search procedures. An increase in the utilization of the training and techniques learned will occur with an increase in the knowledge and experience gained through the training period. Work is performed under the direct and close supervision of a Youth Development Aide Supervisor and/or other higher level personnel who assign workload, provides guidance and direction, and reviews work in progress as well as upon completion for quality and adherence to established standards, policies, procedures, and regulations. This trainee position will participate and assist in actively engaging youth on a daily basis to address personal problems, schedule activities and to provide positive reinforcement and insight into responsible behavior and attitudes. The trainee also participates and assists in observing scheduled activities, assisting staff in implementing the youth’s treatment plans; reporting the youth’s progress in attaining program goals; and assisting in providing care, custody and supervision of the youth’s daily activities including waking, personal hygiene, eating, recreation, work assignments, skill-building and treatment groups and other programmed activities. The trainee may also assist in accompanying adjudicated youth on special assignments; maintaining a safe, secure and structured environment; reacting to emergencies and using restrictive procedures for youth who may be a danger to themselves or others. |
Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Attends formal training classes pertaining to the Commonwealth’s juvenile justice system that includes classroom scenarios and simulations at the Juvenile Justice Academy and other training sources. Participates and assists in the safety and security of adjudicated youth during various activities within the facility. Participates and assists in implementing the adjudicated youth’s treatment plan developed as part of the Master Case Planning System. Participates and assists adjudicated youth in their daily activities such as personal hygiene, eating, recreation, performing work assignments, and in their treatment and programmed activities. Participates and assists in the Multi-Disciplinary Team process. Participates and assists adjudicated youth on good work and study habits. Participates and assists adjudicated youth regarding daily housekeeping duties such as cleaning, laundry, caring for furnishings and dietary to maintain a clean and comfortable living environment. Participates and assists adjudicated youth in their daily activities, special trips and visits. Participates and assists in searches of adjudicated youth and visitors, facility grounds and buildings. Participates and assists in non-professional counseling of adjudicated youth. Observes adjudicated youth and reports changes in personality, demeanor, and degree of program participation. Participates as a member of the support team, to include active participation in shift and/or weekly staff meetings. Follows established procedures or otherwise acts prudently in crisis prevention and intervention. Participates and assists in the movement of adjudicated youth within the facility, on state property and in a public setting. Participates and assists in completing reports, logs and forms in order to maintain accurate records of daily observations of the youth’s progress in meeting program and individual goals. Participates and assists in maintaining order by intervening with disruptive, emotionally disturbed and suicidal youth by being alert, responsive to emergencies and using appropriate restraint techniques to prevent escape, control aggressiveness, and maintain a safe and secure environment. Participates and assists in maintaining security by checking doors, windows, locks, fire alarms, fire extinguishers and reporting deficiencies to ensure staff and youths’ personal safety. Attend and participate in staff meetings, supervisory conferences and staff training programs, including but not limited to Crisis Intervention/Suicide Prevention, Safe Crisis Management, CPR/First Aid and Cultural Diversity in order to develop and maintain position skills. Requires travel, as needed to accomplish trainee work goals and responsibilities. Performs related work as required. |
