Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Operate vehicles and/or equipment which require a Class A Commercial Driver’s License and perform manual work in the construction and maintenance of forest district infrastructure, forest fire protection, and other activities related to operations within the Clear Creek forest district.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Perform a variety of tasks, as listed below, necessary to maintain and improve trails, roads, buildings, and related facilities using equipment, power tools, hand tools and manual work.

ROADS AND TRAIL MAINTENANCE:
1. Operate specialized equipment assisting in initial layout, right-of-way clearing, rough grading, installation of erosion control devices and final grading of foot trails, motorized trails, access roads, public-use roads, parking lots, wildlife openings, and landscaping. Work may involve initial construction improvements or maintenance of existing facilities.
2. Operate combination vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, which may include towing a vehicle or trailer in excess of 10,000 pounds and single vehicles and equipment with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.
3. Use tractor mounted brush mowers and boom mowers to mow roadside edges, wildlife plots, trails, and motorized trails.
4. Operate all-terrain vehicles and a tractor with attached stone rake, mower or leaf blower as required to complete tasks.
5. Maintain trails and boundary lines within the forest district including constructing, repairing, clearing trees/vegetation, and blazing.
6. Perform manual work on assigned projects when not operating equipment.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE:
1. Perform regular preventative maintenance, pre and post inspection, cleaning, and minor repairs on motorized equipment, vehicles, hand tools, and power tools as directed.
2. Complete safety checks and inspections of equipment prior to operation and maintain a written record of equipment use and maintenance.
3. Demonstrate the operation of assigned equipment to other employees.

BUILDING AND FACILITY MAINTENANCE:
1. Maintain directional and informational signage through staining, painting, routing, repairing, and installing signs.
2. Clean, sanitize and restock comfort stations with supplies.
3. Maintain woven-wire, high-tensile steel, and low-tensile ribbon electric deer exclosure fences and associated electrifying equipment through inspection on foot or via all-terrain vehicle, clearing fallen trees/vegetation/debris from fence, clearing fence inspection access roads/trails, and repairing damaged sections of fence/gates/equipment on a regular established schedule.

EMERGENY RESPONSE
In coordination with other emergency responders and in accordance with individual’s qualifications, this position is responsible for responding to emergencies as assigned, both on and off State Forest Lands.
1. Assist in conducting search and rescue operations on DCNR lands in accordance with current DCNR Search & Rescue Policy.
2. Complete all required trainings to for employees assigned to fireline positions as specified by the Bureau of Forestry Training Manual.
3. Assist with wildfire prevention, wildfire suppression, and prescribed fire efforts, using hand tools, power tools, power water pumps, leading fire crews, and other duties as assigned and qualified to perform.
5. Repair and maintain fire equipment as required.
6. Attend fire/emergency related training programs as required.
7. Obtain and maintain Pennsylvania Forest Fire Warden credentials.

OTHER RELATED WORK
1. Assist with forest and wildlife management activities including erosion control, surveying, tree cutting, planting and seeding, pruning, signage, etc.
2. Apply herbicides or pesticides to forest vegetation under the supervision of a certified applicator.
3. Attend staff meetings, trainings, and workshops as directed.
4. Provide public contact information to state forest visitors.
5. Perform other related work as assigned.

Work is assigned with general instructions on a project basis, daily or weekly, by the Assistant Forest Manager. Operate equipment in a safe, professional manner. Take initiative to independently determine the best way to accomplish assigned tasks. Proceed independently or as a work unit, as identified in the instructions. Decision making is required for effectively planning, implementing, and managing assigned projects and duties. Decisions that deviate from established policies, directives, training, standard operating procedures, and/or supervisor’s instruction are referred to the Assistant Forest Manager or another manager when necessary.

Essential Functions

 1. Bend, stoop, climb, and traverse steep, uneven terrain over long distances, sometimes carrying up to 45 pounds – day and night.
