Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This job consists of technical work in the field of forest management and related programs in the Loyalsock State Forest District. Intern may work individually or with foresters or maintenance staff. Employee performs a variety of technical forestry assignments in the areas of timber sales, forest operations, ecological services, insect and disease surveys and recreation projects. Work will include the use of specialized equipment utilized for data collection. Assignments are received from a professional through general instructions. Employees are required to interpret maps, drawings, and plans in the execution of assignments. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for quality of work and compliance with Departmental standards.


Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

1. Collects, downloads, and processes GPS data within Geographic Information System (GIS.) Develops maps for a variety of land features and points of interest on the state forest as directed.

2. Conducts inventories, collects measurements and makes assessments of general forest
infrastructure to include public use roads, buildings, trails, recreational points of interest, unique habitats, ecological resources, areas of special concern, etc.

3. Assists with measuring and tallying live and dead sawtimber and pulpwood trees on reproduction treatments or overstory removals or when trees are designated by Forester. Assists with determining DBH, tree height, tree grade and cull deductions. Must be able to operate general forestry tools such as clinometer, Relaskop, basal area prism, diameter tape, data recorder, etc. Requires ability to gain a working knowledge of dendrology and forest mensuration.

4. Aids Foresters with conducting compartment examinations and reproduction analyses in designated areas. Measures and records basal area, seedling/sapling counts, tree species and crown class distribution.

5. Assists Foresters with recreational projects on state forest land to assess recreational trails, campsites and associated infrastructure to assemble an accurate inventory, determine necessary improvements and make short and long-term plans.

6. Aids the district staff in planting tree seedlings in remote forest areas and collecting seed from mature forest trees. Assists Foresters during wildlife habitat enhancement projects.

7. Assists in the control of forest diseases and insects. Aids a Forester with conducting field surveys and delineating defoliation and mortality. Employee will make decisions in the field based on direction given by the Assistant District Forester. Employee may make decisions in emergency situations and report the information immediately to their supervisor. The level of decision making granted will be based on the individual assignment, but will generally be granted to those decisions not involving costs of over $100.00 or decisions that have permanent effect.
