Position Purpose:

This position will observe and assist with technical work in the field of environmental interpretation and resources management. The intern will assist the Park Ranger 1 and/or EES and/or Park Manager with interpretive programs, outdoor recreation programs, special events, and other public programs. The intern will also attain experience and assist in other aspects of state park operations and management including but not necessarily limited to maintenance, office administration, research, and park ranger assistance at Maurice K. Goddard State Park.


Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Using developed themes and lesson plans, intern will help conduct special activities for park visitors through a series of environmental and outdoor recreation programs that can focus on a variety of topics including natural history, historic and cultural events, outdoor recreation, and resources management. Intern will help maintain educational and programming equipment, and will assist in program marketing and postings. Intern will assist in special events such as Music At The Marina and assist with the DCNR conservation volunteer program.

Intern will work with Staff as well as independently to develop and implement research projects designed to enhance resources management and park operations. Intern will utilize GIS and other technologies as part of these projects.

Intern will engage the visiting public through contacts both in the park office and in the field, providing outstanding customer service. Intern will become familiar with amenities and facilities in the park as well as general park rules and regulations. Intern will assist with park office tasks.

Intern will gain experience in the field of park maintenance by assisting maintenance staff with specific assignments.

Intern will assist with boat inspections for aquatic invasive species. Intern may also assist other agencies or educational institutions in research projects as needed. Intern may assist with invasive species removal, water testing, tree planting, trail maintenance, litter pick up, etc.

Intern will operate a Commonwealth vehicle in conjunction with certain job duties. Intern may assist park staff with certain duties from a boat, kayak, or bicycle.

Intern may be required to perform other special project work as necessary.

Assignments are made either verbally or in writing with considerable freedom of judgment following prescribed policies and procedures. Work is reviewed by Park Manager and/or relayed to Park Manager by Park Staff. Intern and Supervisor will meet regularly to discuss progress and/or pertinent issues.

Intern will be required to work weekends and holidays.
