Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Assist the Forest Maintenance Supervisor with the maintenance, forest fire, recreational, and management activities within the Waterville Maintenance Division. As needed, assistance may require temporary assignment to other District Maintenance Divisions.


Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Maintenance of State Forest Facilities, equipment, and tools; operates equipment, tools, and/or vehicles; performs manual work when not operating equipment; performs other State Forest operations as assigned.

1. State Forest Facilities Maintenance: Cleans, maintains, paints, and repairs State Forest Facilities including buildings, structures, boundaries, trails, equipment, tools, etc. Operates and maintains necessary tools and equipment needed to accomplish the required maintenance.

Performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance work on equipment and tools and assists automotive mechanic when assigned.

Completes safety checks and inspections of equipment and tools prior to operation.

2. Road Maintenance: Operates assigned equipment and tools to maintain a smooth properly
drained road surface and, clear and safe right-of-way.

3. Other State Forest Operations: Assist in accordance with the requirements of this position, with other operations such as, snowmobile trail grooming, snow removal, facility security and protection, and the delivery of supplies and equipment.

4. Forest and Wildlife Management activities such as plantings, seeding, pruning and cutting, etc. are also required, as assigned, to individuals holding this position.

5. Forest Fire Activities: Assist in the prevention, control, and suppression of forest fires.

A. Responds to fire calls as needed.

B. Acts as assigned in big fire suppression situations. (See Forest fire Resource Plan.)

C. Assist as needed in Fire Prevention Programming

D. Assists in the implementation of controlled burns for the purpose of fuel reduction and, forest and wildlife management.

E. Assists with maintenance and operation of equipment and tools used in controlling forest fires.

6. Miscellaneous: To accomplish the requirements of this position, the following items apply.

A. Attend as assigned meetings, trainings, and workshops conducted for the benefit of bureau employees.

B. Keep updated on new district and bureau policies and procedures as identified by the Forest Maintenance Supervisor, Forest Assistant Manager, or Forest District Manager.

C. Assist other bureau employees in the accomplishment of assigned projects necessary for the maintenance and safety of State Forest operations (e.g. surveying, gate installation, carpentry, building demolition, etc.)

D. Maintain and provide an active home telephone number.

E. Perform other duties as assigned.

Work is assigned with general instructions on a project basis, daily or weekly, by the Forest Maintenance Supervisor, Forest Assistant Managers, and/or Forest District Manager. Employees are to proceed independently or as a work unit, as identified in the instructions. Project progress shall be reported to the Forest Maintenance Supervisor, Forest Assistant Manager, or Forest District Manager, as identified in the instructions.
