The Forester will operate as part of the Treatment Monitoring program to measure the outcomes of habitat treatment objectives across the entire State Game Land system. Work involves frequent overnight travel depending on the location of field sites, typically working without immediate supervision. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Utilizes desktop GIS and mobile GIS applications to locate and travel to existing treatment areas (e.g. recent timber harvests, prescribed fires, mowing projects, herbicide applications, etc.) to perform field assessments. Assists Forest Program Specialists with testing applications for data collection and treatment monitoring on handheld data collectors. Uses basic surveying techniques, aerial photographs, topographic and timber stand maps, compass, and GPS as necessary to conduct field work. Records sample point information including, but not limited to stand age, structure, terrain position, cover type, deer impact, disturbance, and percent coverage of low/high evergreens, grass, forbs, ferns, and deciduous shrubs. Photo documents plot with digital camera; downloads and labels photos. Measures and records overstory and mid-canopy tree species variables including, but not limited to, species; tree condition and history; diameter at breast height (DBH); total, merchantable stem, and live crown heights; percent cull; crown class; origin; defoliation and damage. Identifies, measures and records ground flora vegetation variables including, but not limited to, species, percent cover and/or regeneration count. Accurately identifies tree, shrub, vine, grass and herbaceous plant species. Measures condition, diameter and length of downed coarse woody debris, bark scorch, mortality, and leaf and duff consumption. Assists in the development and implementation of data management procedures, standards, formats, and summaries for data collected during field assessments. Transfer all data according to documented procedures. Work effectively with summer interns and Forest Technicians to accomplish program goals and objectives. Develops plans and strategies to effectively complete Treatment Monitoring projects. Work closely with Regional Forestry staff to conduct Treatment Monitoring activities upon request. Analyzes data collected from Treatment Monitoring projects and produces reports showing the results. Presents the results of Treatment Monitoring data analysis to internal and external audiences. Assists Forest Program Specialists with the maintenance and development of hand held data collectors and related software. Secondary Role: Additional Management Activities Survey and mark the boundaries of timber sales, prescribed fires, herbicide areas, and other habitat treatments following instructions given by foresters, land managers, or program specialists. Examine trees, mark timber, and conduct volume computation according to a prescription developed by the forester. Assist foresters in the collection of field data related to stand analysis, sale layout, etc. Enter data collected by foresters or land managers into appropriate computer programs. Collect and compile GPS data for management activities and produce appropriate maps for the approval of the forester or land manager. Conducts surveys and prepares forest habitat type maps. Assists foresters or land managers in habitat management and maintenance by applying herbicides, utilizing chainsaws or brush saws, planting trees / shrubs, etc. Maintain tools and equipment used in habitat management activities. Assist with other Bureau of Wildlife Habitat and Pennsylvania Game Commission programs as needed and assigned on a temporary basis. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor. |
