Position Purpose:

The Senior User Experience Designer leads design initiatives involving multiple systems, channels, or stakeholders that improve digital and non‑digital services, including in‑person, paper‑based, and operational touchpoints across the Commonwealth. This position defines project design strategy, implements and maintains human-centered and accessible design practices, and guides multi‑system interaction and service design work. The role oversees testing and design system governance, ensures design quality, and drives alignment with product, engineering, and policy partners. This senior role shapes design standards, mentors designers, and contributes to service, product, and program decisions across the team and partnering agencies.

Description of Duties:

• Defines design strategy and approach for projects that span multiple systems, services, or user groups.
• Leads interaction and service design efforts that include multi-system workflows, cross channel user journeys, wireframes, prototypes, and end to end service touchpoints.
• Establishes testing cadences and designs usability or concept evaluation studies that inform product decisions, mitigate risks, and validate solutions.
• Governs and evolves the design system, including UI patterns, design tokens, accessibility guidance, documentation, and contribution workflows.
• Provides mentorship and leadership by facilitating critiques, developing designer skills, and ensuring consistency and clarity in design outputs.
• Collaborates with product managers, engineers, policy staff, and agency partners on roadmaps, prioritization, and release planning; represents design in governance processes.
• Contributes to program documentation, including standards, checklists, templates, and onboarding materials that strengthen design practice.
• Advocates for accessibility, plain language, and ethical research practices; supports compliance and inclusive design activities.
• Builds strong working relationships across teams and agencies to advance user centered design practices.
• Plans and manages design timelines, deliverables, and dependencies across multiple concurrent projects.
• Performs other duties as required.
• Travels as required.

• Independently determines design strategy, interaction approach, and service level direction for complex projects.
• Develops design recommendations that influence product, service, and program decisions across teams and agencies.
• Prioritizes design work across multiple projects based on impact, feasibility, and organizational needs, in consultation with their supervisor.
• Resolves design related challenges – such as stakeholder alignment, competing requirements, accessibility considerations, and complex interaction tradeoffs – in consultation with their supervisor.

Experience:

Six years of professional information technology experience and a bachelor’s degree;

 5. Synthesizes insights into design artifacts such as flows, prototypes, and recommendations.
 6. Facilitates workshops and other collaborative activities with cross‑functional partners.
 7. Manages concurrent design projects and ensures timely delivery of high‑quality outputs.
 8. Provides mentorship to designers and maintains design operations and processes.
 9. Ensures accessibility compliance through audit, remediation, and inclusive design activities.
 10. Travels as needed to support team, project, or stakeholder engagement.
